Another one down…

I don’t know what the Wings did to deserve this, but it’s getting ridiculous: Chris Chelios left the game in the first period not long after blocking a shot with the unprotected back of his right leg. Mike Babcock told the media after the game that it might be something of a fracture, though he’s not sure if it’s the kind Cheli could play on (non-displaced).

The Wings played the remainder of the game with five defensemen, three of whom are effectively rookies. The defense came up big, though, with first time NHLer Jonathan Ericsson looking like a veteran together with a similarly poised Derek Meech. Ericsson is the real deal, folks, and Meech is more impressive every time I see him play.

After that performance, it’s hard to be worried about the defense in the playoffs, to be honest. I say that in spite of the fact that the Wings still lost 1-0. They called it a moral victory on the radio and it’s hard to disagree.  Still, I can do without the moral victories. That’s what Monday’s win was as well, and the team lost Nick Lidstrom. Tonight it was Chelios. Any more moral victories like that and there won’t be much of a team left.

Anyway, I’m sure there will be more on Chelios in the morning. It seems a safe bet that he won’t be in the lineup against the Canucks, which would mean the very, very green (i.e. not NHL-ready) Jakub Kindl  or the fairly steady Garrett Stafford could get the call.

Oh yeah. Anyone else think Dion Phaneuf should be facing league discipline for that vicious-but-somehow-unpenalized hit on Tomas Kopecky? Five games, please. Maybe more.

Update (12:33 PM): George Malik scouts the Flames here. - Matt

Tonight is the fourth and final meeting between the Detroit Red Wings and the Calgary Flames this season. The Detroit leads the series 3-0 with wins October 10th (4-2), November 1st (4-1) and November 27th (5-3).

The Flames are 5-5-0 in February thus far. They began the month with a pair of losses: 2-1 to Dallas on the 2nd and 5-0 to the Oilers on the 4th. The rebounded on the 5th with a 4-3 SO win over Phoenix, but lost again two nights later, 3-1 to Chicago. The followed the loss to the Hawks with wins over Edmonton on the 9th (4-1) and San Jose on the 12th (4-3 OT). A pair of losses cut any hope for a win streak short, as they dropped games in LA (6-3) and Anaheim (4-2) on the 15th and 17th. They are 2-0 since then, however, having pulled out wins in Phoenix (4-1) and Dallas (3-2) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Calgary’s 70 points are good for third in the Northwest Division and 8th in the Western Conference. This is a potential first round matchup.

Jarome Iginla leads the Flames in goals with 38 and points with 74. Daymond Langkow (24), Kristian Huselius (21), Owen Nolan (15), Alex Tanguay (13), Dion Phaneuf (13), and Matthew Lombardi (10) have all cracked the double-digit goal barrier.

David Moss (ankle) is listed as questionable.

It looks like we can expect to see Miikka Kiprusoff in net tonight, though it’s not outside the realm of possibility that former Red Wing Curtis Joseph could get the nod. Kiprusoff has posted a 2.79 GAA and .899 save-percentage this season. Joseph has appeared in just three games (one in relief) and has a 3.00 GAA and .899 save-percentage. If Joseph plays, he will look to pass Detroit great Terry Sawchuk in wins. He moved into a tie fourth-place tie with Sawchuck with his 447th career win on Wednesday.

For the Flames’ perspective, see  Battle of Alberta, Completely Hammered, Five Hole Fanatics, and Open Ice Hits.

The Wings improved to 4-5-1 in February with an emotional 4-0 win over Colorado on Monday. The win snapped a six-game losing streak that included losses to LA, Toronto, Anaheim, Nashville, Columbus, and Dallas.  Tonight is the third of a five-game stretch of road games. The team earned a reprieve from the stress of travel by returning to Detroit following their win over Colorado, but they will travel to Vancouver to face the Canucks tomorrow night and to Edmonton to face the Oilers on Tuesday.

Despite their recent skid, the Wings retain their lead over the rest of the League, though it has dwindled to just ten points.

Henrik Zetterberg leads the team in goals with 35 and points with 73. Pavel Datsyuk is not far behind with 72 points. Datsyuk (21), Tomas Holmstrom (20), Valtteri Filppula (16), Johan Franzen (12), and Jiri Hudler (11) are the active Wings who have cracked the 10-goal mark.

The team will be without Nick Lidstrom (sprained knee) for a full game for the first time this season. He is scheduled to sit out the next three weeks or so after spraining his knee as the result of a hit by Ian Laperriere Monday night. Big Jonathan Ericsson was called up from Grand Rapids to fill in as a result of Nick’s injury. He will make his NHL debut tonight.

Brian Rafalski (groin) will sit out his fourth straight. Kyle Quincey will fill in for the second time this season.

Niklas Kronwall (clavicle) will miss his 11th in a row. Derek Meech will play his 11th consecutive game as a result.

Dan Cleary (broken jaw) is out for the fifth straight game.

Expect Aaron Downey to remain in the lineup tonight.

Projected lines:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Filppula-Zetterberg-Samuelsson
Drake-Draper-Maltby
Downey-Hudler-Kopecky

Projected pairings (based on Khan):

Meech-Lilja
Chelios-Quincey
Ericsson-Lebda

Those will probably be mixed up throughout the game.

Chris Osgood will get the start tonight.

For more of the Wings’ perspective, see Snapshots, Abel to Yzerman, HockeyTownTodd, Behind the Jersey, No Pun Intended, Red Wings Nation, yzerman is god, Detroit Hockey, LetsGoWings, and Winging It In Motown. OklahomaWingNut’s GDT is here.

Tonight’s game is new territory for the Wings, who don’t have to play without Nick Lidstrom very often. They will have a very young defense going up against a speedy and physical Calgary team that carries the threat of Jarome Iginla. Chris Osgood is going to be on top of his game and the Wings’ offense is going to need to click at a high level. I have confidence in the youngsters and I’m looking forward to seeing Ericsson play in the NHL, but this will be an interesting test.

11/27 Notes

Update (1:10 PM): George Malik has a slick roundup of media and player comments on the game over at Snapshots. - Matt

… So the Wings beat the Flames 5-3 last night. From the little that I saw online (while in class), it looked like a fast-paced game, though that impression may be due to the stop-and-go nature of the video feed. Since I didn’t get to watch the whole thing and therefore cannot comment on it much at all, I have some links for you:

… Aside from the win, the big news coming out of the game is the injury to Kris Draper at 18:40 of the first period. Evidently, he twisted his left knee while behind the net with Owen Nolan. He was able to drive himself to the DMC for an MRI, but Mike Babcock told the media “”We’re a little concerned right now,” though the hope is obviously that it’s nothing major. We’ll probably find out more today.

As the Freep points out, Johan Franzen, the last Red Wing to sprain his knee, missed 10 games. Let’s hope Drapes can make it back sooner than that.

… If you’re looking for the Dion Phaneuf hit on Jiri Hudler, look no further:

Fortunately for him, Jiri gets his head up at the last second there, so he wasn’t totally unprepared. A bit of a high one, but Hudler is one of the shorter guys in the league, so that isn’t so surprising. A spectacular hit, to be sure, though I’m not a fan of the elbow-on-head contact.

… In response to Ian’s question on the gameday post, the “A” is on rotation between Zetterberg, Draper, and Datsyuk.

Also, yes, we’d be screwed if one of the top three goes down. More so if one of the Eurotwins does, but losing Homer would decimate the power play.

GameDay: vs. Calgary (10-11-3, 23 Pts) 7:00 ET

Update (6:35 PM): You can watch the game online on NHL TV here. It’s the Sportsnet feed if you’d rather not watch the Versus one.  - Matt

Update (2:25 PM): The Calgary Herald’s Steve Cruickshank, writing for the paper’s Flames Insider blog, has a pre-game update of his own.

First, he relates a run-in Chris Osgood had with Kris Draper in the lockerroom (birthday shaving cream pie + Ozzie’s face = ensuing hilarity).

On a more serious note, he writes that Owen Nolan is expected to dress tonight, while Marcus Nilson is not. Nolan, by the way, has just 4 goals and 8 points through 23 games.

The Flames evidently did not skate today, choosing instead to have meetings.

Also, Red Wings TV now has an interview with Nick Lidstrom on the game tonight. - Matt

Update (2:05 PM): Helene St. James’ post-practice update has little to add except that “Dominik Hasek has flu-like symptoms,” though it appears he’ll be capable of sitting half-in-uniform on the bench to “back up” Chris Osgood, who had the flu a week and a half ago. Let’s hope Dom is the last player to come down with it.

There’s also this post-practice interview from Mike Babcock on Red Wings TV. Again, the network’s to slow to actually allow me to watch it, but I’m sure it’s very profound. - Matt

Update (11:52 AM): Bruce MacLeod reports that neither Tomas Kopecky (shoulder) nor Matt Ellis (headaches) has been cleared to play tonight. Kopecky seems to be okay, however, as he participated in practice, but Ellis only worked out off the ice. So, the lineup will be the same as it was Saturday.

MacLeod’s practice lines also show that Jiri Hudler’s banishment to the fourth line continues, despite the fact that Johan Franzen is a much better fit with Dallas Drake and Aaron Downey. I have nothing at all against Drake or Downey, but they aren’t offensively-minded players like Jiri, whose talent is completely wasted on that line. Hudler does not have the size or physicality to make that unit cohesive. Franzen, on the other hand is both large and physical. I’m a big fan of Johan and believe he has a decent offensive upside, but I also believe he should have to earn a second line spot, which he hasn’t quite done. In the meantime, he and his size should be put to use on the energy line.

Jiri hasn’t scored a goal since the 11th, but he has two assists in the past three games, which is more than can be said about Franzen and his one goal in thirteen games played. - Matt

Update (11:40 AM): The Calgary Herald has a couple nice pieces on two Red Wings today: Brian Rafalski and Chris Osgood. It’s good to see the opposition paper write about the Wings. It’d be even better if the Detroit media did the same for the Wings’ opposition. - Matt

Update (10:00 AM): HockeyTownTodd has his preview posted. - Matt

Tonight is the third of four games between these two teams this season. The Wings won the first two meetings, beginning with a 4-2 decision on October 10th and finishing with a 4-1 decision on November 1st. The fourth and final game in the series will be played on February 22nd in Calgary.

After a decent a 6-3-3 start in the first month, the Flames have had a bit of a rough November, posting a 4-8-0 record thus far. The loss to the Wings on the first kicked off a skid that lasted five games that only ended on the 13th with a 3-2 win over Minnesota. Since then, they’ve alternated wins and losses. They’ve managed two wins over Colorado and a win over Edmonton, but have lost to Vancouver, Chicago, and St. Louis over their past six. The loss to St. Louis, a 3-0 decision, came on Sunday in their most recent game. Tonight is the last night in a three-stop road trip for the Flames, who have a four-game homestand to look forward to. They’re 4-5-1 on the road, but 6-6-2 at home.

Jarome Iginla leads the team in the three major offensive statistical categories: goals (13), assists (17) and points (30). Daymond Langkow and Alex Tanguay are next with 21 points.

According to the Calgary Sun, Rhett Warrener (leg) and Wayne Primeau (ankle) are out, but Marcus Nilson (concussion) and Owen Nolan (hip) are day-to-day and could possibly play. The Calgary Herald reported yesterday that Nolan is ready to go, at least according to Mike Keenan, the head coach.

Miikka Kiprusoff will be in net tonight.

For the Flames perspective, check out Battle of Alberta, Completely Hammered, Five Hole Fanatics, and Open Ice Hits.

The Wings haven’t exactly had a stellar November themselves, having posted a 5-4-1 record thus far. They played nine straight against Central Division opponents and finished that stretch with a measly 4-4-1 record. They are coming off a shootout loss to Columbus on Saturday and, before that, a regulation loss to Nashville on Thursday. They aren’t playing their best hockey at the moment.

Henrik Zetterberg still leads the team in goals (16) and points (32) and Pavel Datsyuk is the assist leader with 18.

Tomas Kopecky (shoulder) and Matt Ellis (headaches) are both listed as “questionable.” Ellis did not practice yesterday and Kopecky only participated in non-contact drills, so it’s highly unlikely either of them will suit up tonight. Thus, it’ll be Aaron Downey and Dallas Drake on the fourth line, probably with Jiri Hudler.

Chris Osgood will get his second consecutive start tonight. The team has more confidence in his ability to earn them at least a point than they did in Hasek’s, at the moment.

Be sure to stop by Snapshots, Gorilla Crouch, Abel to Yzerman, HockeyTownTodd, Gloveside, Behind the Jersey, No Pun Intended, and Winging It In Motown today.

Mike Babcock called the team out after the loss to Columbus Saturday:

“It was the first time in a long, long time that we didn’t have enough people ready to play and ready to compete. That’s unacceptable and that’s un-Red Wing like.”

Hopefully the players got the message. They’ll need to be on top of things tonight.

Unfortunately, my evening class conflicts with the game, so I’m definitely missing the beginning, and possibly the end. We’ll see.

Wings 4, Flames 1

My plan last night was to watch the game and post a full-length recap, but things did not go as planned. Because of a family emergency, I was unable to watch more than about a period and a half of the game and therefore I do not have a recap for you. If you weren’t able to watch last night, head over to Gorilla Crouch and check out Dave’s post on the game, which is as good as usual.

GameDay: @ Calgary (6-3-3, 15 Pts) 8:00 ET

Update (2:15 PM): For whatever reason, I have a little bit of a sense of foreboding for the game tonight. Seeing that Miikka Kiprusoff made 39 saves against Nashville Tuesday night doesn’t help. - Matt

Update (10:00 AM): Dave at Gorilla Crouch points out that Johan Franzen saw time on the second line Tuesday night and suggests that he’ll see more minutes there tonight against a physical Calgary team.

It’d certainly make sense from a size standpoint, as Johan is a much bigger guy than little Jiri Hudler. Jiri doesn’t seem to have a lot of trouble playing against physical teams, but putting Franzen in his spot would at least give Valtteri Filppula some more space. - Matt

Tonight is the second of four games between these two teams this season. The Wings won the first meeting, 4-2 on Oct 10 in Detroit. They’ll meet once more this month before wrapping the series up in February.

Since losing to the Wings, Calgary has posted a 6-1-2 record. Their only losses during that stretch came to Colorado (5-4, shootout; 3-2, shootout) and San Jose (4-1, regulation). Their wins came against Dallas, Nashville (2x), LA, Edmonton, and Minnesota. The won their most recent game, which was their second against Nashville. Tonight’s game is the end of a 7-game homestand for the Flames.

Jarome Iginla leads the Flames with 19 points, which puts him second behind the Wings’ own Henrik Zetterberg in the NHL scoring race. The Flames captain has 8 goals and 11 assists. The team has three more players with double digit point totals: Daymond Langkow (17), Alex Tanguay (15), and Kristian Huselius (12).

Miika Kiprusoff has posted a pretty pedestrian 2.97 GAA and .891 save-percentage so far this season, but remains a formidable goalie. He’s played in every Flames to this point and there’s no reason to think he won’t play tonight.

The Wings have gone 7-2-0 since beating the Flames on October 10th. The losses came against Chicago and Anaheim. They are currently on a six-game winning streak in which they’ve beaten San Jose (2x), Phoenix, Vancouver (2x), and Edmonton. Tonight is the final stop in a three-game Western Canada road trip, but there’s no decent homestand coming up until later in December.

Henrik Zetterberg leads the team and the league with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists). Four more Wings have double-digit point totals: Tomas Holmstrom (14), Pavel Datsyuk (14), Brian Rafalski (11), Nick Lidstrom (10).

With Dominik Hasek still out because of a sore hip, Chris Osgood will get his fourth straight start and Jimmy Howard will ride the pine again.

Niklas Kronwall skated yesterday but will not return tonight, which means Derek Meech will get another game. They’re saying Kronwall should be ready for Wednesday’s game against Nashville.

Mike Babcock said yesterday that, due to Calgary’s toughness, Aaron Downey may get to suit up tonight. Not sure who they’d sit, since both Johan Franzen and Dallas Drake are pretty tough. Drake, though, can’t drop the gloves if need be due to his face mask, so he may be the one.

After a rough start, the Flames have turned things around and are looking pretty good. The Wings have had a great run and haven’t looked to be getting too complacent, so hopefully tonight isn’t the night they start. Expect a physical, hard-fought game.
