Four years of OtW

Four years ago today, I started this blog under the redundant title, “zata40fan’s Wings Fan Blog.” Before too long, I changed it to the current name and as I got more involved in blogging, the content changed drastically from this first post:

My first post…… Things are going well with the Wings, they won last night (beat the Pens 5-1) and have won 5 in a row. They’re still #1 in the West but 2 points behind Ottawa still. Zata didn’t get a point last night, neither did Hully or Pavel. Luc finally scored and Feds had 2.

Wordpress tells me that we have 1,607 posts, 977 of which have not been categorized yet (I’m trying to get to that - maybe this summer), and 1,446 comments. Hard to believe.

I want to think everyone who has participated in writing over the last four years, from Brian and Christy to Megan and Sarah, as well as all who have been regular commenters. It’s that participation that keeps me blogging on days I might rather not. The same goes for all the bloggers who have linked to our posts: thanks guys! I still get pumped when we get a link to content at OtW.

As an aspiring historian, I know a fanblog isn’t the most objective way of recording history, but the purpose of this blog remains the same: I want myself and others to have a record of this team that goes beyond dry AP and newspaper reports so that in 10 years when the Wings are almost completely different, we can look back over the years with a firmer foundation than our memories (and not have to get through a newspaper archive paywall to do it).

Who knows much longer we’ll be doing this? I certainly don’t have any plans to stop! I look forward to blogging the Wings for a long time to come.

Wings 4, Preds 2

Update (12:38 PM): Posted. - Matt

My game summary may be up later in the afternoon/evening, depending on how the breaks in my schedule go. I’m hoping to get it done before then, but no promises. In the meantime, check out Dave’s reaction to the game, as well as The Forechecker’s liveblog.

If I were a hockey player…

I guess it’s my turn to do this thing:

Team: Detroit Red Wings

Uniform Number: 75 (wore it in football)

Position: Defense

Nickname: Psycho (another football relic)

Dream blueline partner: Nick Lidstrom (to make up for all my mistakes - who am I kidding?)

Rounding out the Power Play: Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux and Pavel Bure

Job: Strictly a defensive defenseman

Signature Move: No move, but I’d own the boards.

Strengths: My size.

Weaknesses: My lack of a skating ability

Equipment: Easton skates and a wood stick.

Nemeses: Anyone with quicker feet

Scandal Involvement: Frequent spectacular losses of temper.

Who I’d Face in the Stanley Cup Finals: New York Rangers

What I’d do with the Stanley Cup After Our Victory: Take it around my college to see how many “hockey fans” would come out of the woodwork

Would the Media Love Me or Hate Me: They’d have field days with the results of my temper.

Next up: Megan and Sarah, plus anyone who hasn’t done it yet.

Wings 4, Sharks 9

I only caught bits of the game last night and even though I have it on tape, I’m not doing a writeup. I’m sicker than a dog today and there’s no way I’m up to it. Sorry.

Merry Christmas

Chances are posting will be light over the next couple days. I’ll be in Holland this afternoon and tomorrow, at least, and will be otherwise occupied. I should have something for the game on Wednesday. So, On the Wings is on a brief holiday break.

Merry Christmas!

A day off

Update (3:36 PM): I’ve been told that I sound patronizing in this post and, reading over it again, I have to agree. The thing is, when I was writing it, I had frantic “let’s trade Draper, Maltby, and Schneider for Doan” message boarders in mind. IwoCPO definitely is not one of those, by the way - I just got on a tangent after reading his post.

Seeing the team score more goals would definitely be a good thing, but I, for one, am going to try to be satisfied with a hard-working, defense-oriented team because I feel they can be successful if they perfect it.

The team, in general, is playing well defensively, with just a few loose ends that could be tied up (i.e. giving up a couple goals despite allowing only 20 or so shots). Why take the team in the opposite direction? - Matt

Update (1:13 PM): Just a clarification on my snarky comments below:

I believe the team needs offense, of course, and that they need to get the power play going. But I also believe they’ll have more success if they continue to stress defensive play and not offense at the expense of defense.

Folks, this team is not going to blow out the opposition as frequently as Wings teams in the past have done simply because Babcock is emphasizing team defense. Can they and will they dominate offensively at times? Sure. They certainly have the personnel for it. Most often, however, we should be seeing consistently strong defensive efforts instead of dominating offensive performances. This is a Mike Babcock team, after all.

The power play is miserable and needs to be fixed, but, realistically, we can expect one or two PPGs per game. So we’re still not going to see 5-6 goal games.

This team needs to continue allowing only 20 shots a game. They just need to stop giving up a couple goals, which means Hasek needs to be more dominant.

Defensive diligence, not offensive dominance, is the hallmark of this team. It means they’ll be streaky, winning a few and then losing a few. It means they’ll get blown out occassionally but it also means they’ll do the blowing out themselves every once and a while.

In the end, they’ll be in the middle of the pack in the standings as well as offensive categories. They’ll be on top in defense, however. Get used to it, Wings fans. - Matt

It’s a bit of a slow news day so I’m taking the day off from blogging - unless something happens worth posting about - so I can focus on class, work, and homework.

I will point you to A2Y, though, so you can read IwoCPO’s take on solutions for ending cheap shots against the Wings. Basically, they need to increase their offensive output by getting the power play going. Once that’s done, they can score PPGs after unrelated phantom calls and then thumb their noses at the opposition bench as they revel in retaliation for a hit on an earlier un-penalized play.

Revenge’ll be sweet, if they can just get the power play going! Other teams will still be able to deal out concussions and charley-horses left and right, but, by golly, they’ll regret it when the Wings score one or two power plays. Just pray they don’t put their potential for supreme defensive prowess on hold and start allowing goals as they work on fulfiling their much more limited offensive potential.

Attention Wings fans in Edmonton

If you’re a Wings fan and live in Edmonton, drop us a line or chime in on the comments. We’re interested in knowing how many of our Red-and-White brothers and sisters are out there behind enemy lines. Thanks!

Playoff mode coming but not yet

Okay, I’ve decided not to do a summary for tonight. I’m home on Easter Break and too tired to stay up long enough to watch the game and do a summary before going to bed, and I can’t take the time in the morning because I’m spending this weekend (with the exception of Easter) writing a major paper.

These last games are essentially meaningless, anyway, and hopefully they’ll stay that way, if you know what I mean.

So, expect posting to be light until later next week. Soon, it’ll be playoff time and the priority fight between school and postseason hockey will begin!

GameDay: @ Chicago (24-31-13, 61 Pts) 8:30 ET

No preview for today’s game since I overslept (yes, 5:30 AM is oversleeping. It is today anyway.) and won’t have time later today. Not like a preview is needed since we’ve seen the Hawks seven other times already. Also, a game summary may or may not happen. It depends. Sorry.

Update (2:54 PM): Ansar Khan reports:

The Red Wings will dress only 18 players (16 skaters, two goalies) tonight in Chicago.Steve Yzerman didn’t make the Chicago-St. Louis trip because of a “lower-body injury” (don’t panic, it’s nothing serious, if you know what I mean). Jason Williams also isn’t playing because of a “lower-body injury,” while Robert Lang (upper body injury), Pavel Datsyuk (lower body) and Mathieu Schneider (groin) remain out.

Good grief, coach. The League can’t be too thrilled with the sudden rash of mysterious injuries on their best team.

Edmonton Journal: “On the Wings and a prayer”

They steal our name and don’t even link to us. Sheesh! (Yes, I know it’s just a coincidence, I just got a kick out of it, via. A2Y)
