Maltby Declines to Take One For the Team

Update (2:48 PM): Scratch that. Maybe. St. James now says Maltby’s likely to have the surgery and she has it from Holland, apparently.

Then later she says, “However, given that he needs surgery at some point, it’s just as likely he will decide to have that soon, which would make it possible for the Wings to put him on long-term injured reserve.”

So we’re not talking for sure sure, but pretty close if Holland’s claiming it’s happening. Maltby still has a choice. Or does he? Interesting…

Also, Lilja’s being cleared today or tomorrow, which means this situation’s going to break open sooner rather than later. - Matt

Looks like there won’t be a surgery in Maltby’s immediate future. He’s opting to instead take a third cortisone shot and risk those side effects. That solidifies the Wings’ cap bind, as they still have to unload $700,000 assuming Lilja’s cleared to play.

They’ve been able to get away with delaying that announcement through the Olympics, apparently, but come Monday, you have to think they’ll need to make it official one way or another.

Can’t really blame Maltby for trying to stay in the lineup rather than all but end his own career with a surgery, but this is really going to suck for someone on the roster. Doubtful the Wings will drop Maltby himself or a defenseman if they can help it, which may mean Williams’ days are in fact numbered here.

We can only hope, right?

I totally understand why Maltby doesn't want to get the surgery. His days in Detroit are definitely numbered, maybe the rest of this season and part of next.

But I don't think Williams will be going, I'd say it would be Lebda. He makes upwards of $800K and Meech has played as well as he as, and will Lilja coming back, even with Ericsson's poor play, I think Lebda would be the odd-man out.

Meech has never complained about his role in Detroit, playing or not, he is a team guy. I don't see Ledba being the same way. He can also fill in up front if needed.

I'd say Lebs is on the way out, maybe for a 4th round pick.

      Mike,

I totally get it too. Maltby has every right to make this decision and I won't be second-guessing him. My title's mostly tongue-in-cheek.

As for Lebda versus Williams, what matters here is cap hit and Lebs' is just under the $700,000 needed. They'd have to move someone else, which I can't see them interested in doing.

Lebda's never complained either, so I don't quite get the lauding Meech gets for that to the exclusion of Brett.

It's a moot point now, but according to cap geek, if Maltby didn't take the surgery then they'd be 580K over the limit. The logical choice would be Lebda, especially because I would assume he's gone at the deadline anyhow, because both he and Meech have expiring contracts and with Lilja they've got 8 d-men, so you know they're going to try to move either Lebda or Meech now to get something for them instead of losing them this summer.

And while Lebda's not complained, he hasn't been given as thankless a task as Meech has. I don't think Meech is given as much credit as he deserves. He's taken one for the team to the detriment of the development of his career. He's been asked to sit regularly, to play when needed, to play forward whenever they're feeling a cap squeeze because of minor injuries and he's never been given even the chance at a fulltime jobe. What he's done to his career for Detroit is, to me, as big as what Maltby is doing as far as taking one for the team. At least Maltby's had a long career, Meech is still at the beginning of his.

        • Garth says:

Either way, with Kindl's contract up I have to assume that Meech and Lebda are no longer Wings after this year, so better to get something for one of them at the trade deadline…

        • Matt Saler says:

As far as Meech never complaining, the absence of public complaint doesn't mean the absence of complaint. It may just be that the media is not interested in him. I suspect he's maintained a decent attitude, but on the other hand, he seemed like a loner in Traverse City. Not stellar teammateship there.

          • Garth says:

I don't know, I sort of think that if he had complained internally, he wouldn't be there. I mean, we know now that Kyle Quincey and his agent complained about not getting a Stanley Cup ring, and I would honestly assume that his complaining had to be at least part of the reason they waived him instead of Meech. I can't imagine that they would keep Meech around if he's been complaining about his role for two years…

And being a loner doesn't neccesarily make you a bad teammate, and how can we know that he's to blame for it?
