Wings 3, Blues 4 (SO)

Deserved, undeserved: On the one hand, the Wings didn’t deserve to even get one point: they did a great imitation of a steaming pile of crap for like 99% of the game. But they overcame a two-goal deficit, albeit with goals you’d find in the dictionary next to “garbage.” I guess that counts for something. But I definitely fall more on the undeserved point side of things.

Jimmy: A waste of another strong performance. At this point, if they’re going to lose anyway, why bother starting the hot guy? Why continue to subject him to this complete lack of support?

Leadership: I can’t shake the feeling that this season would be a lot worse had the calls of some been answered with the removal of Babcock. It seems clear he’s the reason the team’s even doing as well as it is. The players are sleepwalking at best or near-comatose. There’s only so much even the best coach can do about that. You can say “if he’s lost the players, it’s time for a change,” all you want, but who would do better? Babcock is the best bench boss out there. Anyone less isn’t a long-term solution, even if we see a short-term improvement from the babies in uniform. It’s not coaching, or at least, it’s not mostly coaching. It’s leadership.

I get flak for calling out the Lidstroms, Zetterbergs, Datsyuks, Rafalskis, Kronwalls, etc. on the team, but to me that’s where the issue lies. The men with the the letters on their chests or the big bucks need to step it up here. They need to lead by example. They’re not doing that. Here and there, you see above-mediocre shifts from those guys, but when’s the last time you saw any of them flat out dominate over an extended period in a game to such a degree you got excited and stayed that way? Datsyuk threading the puck through a couple guys isn’t what I’m talking about here. There used to be magic in those names. There isn’t any more.

Those players need to dig deep and lead the team out of this wilderness.

Two more: Two more games before the Break. The Wings can choose to float through those like they’ve floated through so many games so far this season, or they can go into it having made a statement. Which is it going to be, Lidstrom? Zetterberg? Datsyuk? Rafalski?

Postscript- Franzen: A solid start, for sure. He looked pretty good out there for a guy who hadn’t played in four months. With a little more rust shaken off, he could start chasing pucks into the net. Maybe The Mule needs to take the team on his back.

Great post Matt. I agree with everything you said.

I just don't understand where our puck possession went. People can point to the players lost last summer all they want, but from the 08 Cup team we only really lost Sammy, Happy, and Drake. Those guy can't make THAT much of a difference. This team needs to make it their mission to keep control of the puck. Can you imagine what Jimmy's numbers would be if he didn't have to face 40+ shots and 12 giveaway induced scoring chances each game? 30 shots used to be a high number of shots against, with some teams not even hitting 20 in an entire game, and now we give up 20 in a period to the freaking St. Louis Blues? Bullshit. This team needs to get it thru their heads that this IS the playoffs, right now. Because chances are if they go thru another 7 game stretch and lose 4 times, they are done, just like the playoffs.

We've been saying this for months now, but it has to turn around NOW. Other teams with a helluva lot less talent/depth (see Ottawa, LA) can win 10 straight games, there's no reason this team can't do the same and lock in their postseason berth.

All I have to say is this

The Olympic break is much needed for both our injured players to get rest, and hopefully our Olympic players to get a spark and start producing.

We HAVE to go 2-0 in the next 2 games…and it IS doable!

24 games left….we need to win at least 17 of those

I definitely agree. Yeah, the coach is responsible, but there's only so much that a guy can do. It's all about execution in the end. The players have to WANT to go out and win games and put in the hard work. This season, they just don't look like they've cared at all.

I definitely agree about Babcock. Bad as it is, this season hasn't yet spiraled out of control, and he's probably largely to thank for that.

I'll just try to make my case for Zetterberg, and Datsyuk once more, then I'll let it rest. Playing with Bertuzzi has really hurt them this year. According to the line combo gizmo at FrozenPool, Betuzzi has played over 75% of his icetime at even strength with Datsyuk or Zetterberg (63% with Datsyuk, 35% with Zetterberg, and so 23% with both). Datsyuk is +13 and Zetterberg +6 (first and second among Wing forwards), so Bertuzzi should be riding their coattails to a nice +/-, right? Well, he _should_, but instead, he's -7 (second worse among Wing forwards still on the team).

Bertuzzi isn't a good hockey player. But it's worse than that–he actively makes the Red Wings worse every time he touches the ice. It's Zetterberg and especially Datsyuk who have to clean up after his messes.

"Bertuzzi isn’t a good hockey player."

The guy is fourth on the team in points and almost single-handedly won 3 games for the Wings in December. For a guy whose on pace for 20 goals and making just $1.5m, I'd say he was doing alright. If you want to be upset, how about that bang-for-you-buck return on the Euro-twins: $14m might get you 40 goals and 120 pts this year!

Or…maybe its been a terrible year with all the injuries and the team hasn't had a chance to get into any kind of rhythm, so everyone's points are down.

  5. Garth says:

Franzen definitely looked good, not really like a guy who missed as much time as he has. Whereas a little while ago I was glad he wasn't named to the Olympic team, I'm kind of hoping that he will be now. If he gets some game time and if the Swedes have some success then he and the others could bring back some enthusiasm and the winning touch to the Wings. God knows we need some kind of spark.

"Bertuzzi isn’t a good hockey player. But it’s worse than that–he actively makes the Red Wings worse every time he touches the ice."

You very clearly have ZERO clue what you are talking about.
