Game Day Notes: @ Chicago

I’m a bit out of the loop because I missed the game yesterday while Up North, so I’ll keep this to a minimum.

… Despite a miraculous level of health considering this season’s injury trends, Chicago is just six points ahead of the Wings. They do have two games in hand so that’s not quite as close as it looks, but this is an opportunity to gain in both categories.

… The Hawks’ position will definitely be helped by the arrival of Marian Hossa in the lineup. He’s got 10 points in 11 games. Another reason head-to-head meetings between these teams are important: the Wings have a direct say in the Hawks’ record and can work to shut down guys like Hossa.

… Chicago is without such luminaries Adam Burish, Dave Bolland and Ben Eager due to injury.

… Cristobal “Sorry, guys” Huet will be in net tonight for Chicago.

… The Wings are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Stars last night. I missed the game, but check out The Production Line’s take.

… No new injuries. I hope I can write that tomorrow too, but maybe that’s hoping for too much given Chicago’s collection of punks.

… Darren Helm returned from a wrist injury in Dallas and got 19:16 in ice time. Should be up there again. His speed and physicality will be helpful tonight.

… Todd Bertuzzi has 10 goals as of yesterday. Crazy, huh?

… Chris Osgood gets the start tonight. Right into the fire, Chris. Hope your head’s in it now.

… The Wings battled hard Thursday night against Tampa Bay and pulled out a win despite losing their 1B leader, Henrik Zetterberg, to a shoulder injury in the first period. They’ll need to dig even deeper tonight to be at Chicago team that is, admittedly, good (if overhyped).

Expect it (the digging). They’re going to be motivated tonight. As will be the Hawks. Should be a good game.

… If you don’t have FSD+, you’re out of luck on this one. Stupid, considering this is about as big as regular season hockey games get. Putting it in the FSD+ ghetto seems a bit idiotic.

George has the number list here, if you do get it.

Our top line was unstoppable last night. Pav and Bert are showing awesome chemisty together, and Bert's confidence in particular is through the roof. Pav's skill combined with Berts combo of size, hands (where were they all year?), and sudden confidence is a deadly combination.

I like the Wings position going into this game tonight. They really have no pressure on them at all, while Chicago has tons of pressure on them. The Wings are without nearly half of their starting lineup, so if the Hawks win, it really doesn't mean a thing. If the Wings win, that has to be devastating to the Hawks, knowing they can't even beat big brother who is using a hybrid NHL/AHL team. Nothing to lose tonight, I expect the Wings to play loose with a lot of energy.

I've started referring to the Wings as the augmented Griffins.  :)

When I look at the lineup and realize how little overlap there is with last year and they are still hanging in there, I can only shake my head at the feat.  Pretty amazing.

This is the kind of game the Wings usually struggle with when it's the other way around. How many times do we see a rested Wings team play at home against a depleted team coming off a game the night before and get beat. I'm hoping it works the same way in reverse tonight.

It's funny, I was thinking about the Hawks today, and at first all I could think about was all the weapons they have, and I felt a little nervous. Then I thought about Quennville and Huet, and I was happy again.

Oh, and Stuart, can you please level Hossa, Seabrook, and Kopecky tonight? Thanks.

  4. Baroque says:

I hope Stuart leaves Kopecky untouched, actually.  Leave Chicago with one of their most potent offensive weapons intact.  :D

  5. John W. says:

Yeah, it'll probably hard for Stuart to find Kopecky anyways, he only played 6:48 last game, and that was a game that went OT. Impact free agent signing there!

  6. John W. says:

Well, it was a long shot with the depleted team in the 2nd half of back 2 back road games, but Ozzie really shot the team in the foot, repeatedly, tonight. All 3 goals were soft, but the 3rd 1 was just inexcusable.

I really am fed up with this "regular season means nothing" Osgood we've been subjected to the last 2 seasons. If we can't get a motivated Osgood after Howard is threatening his job, then when can we? It looks to me that he is taking for granted the notion that he is automatically the playoff starter. What he fails to see is that the playoffs are not a lock this year, and neither is his default status as the starter. Jimmy Howard, while not always the steadiest guy, battles. Osgood always has that "not my fault" reaction after every goal, and I'm sick of it.

The team as a whole did not play well, but that's when you need the goalie to step up, not sabotage the team from behind.
