Kindl Recalled

The Grand Rapids Press‘ Michael Zuidema reports that Jakub Kindl has been recalled. The AHL wire doesn’t say anything about it yet, but it doesn’t always get updated quickly.

While Zuidema says Kindl could make his NHL debut tomorrow night, I think we can safely assume this means Rafalski’s sitting and Jakub’s in. They’d just wait to call him up after the morning skate tomorrow if they were going to wait until then to see how Rafi’s feeling. They must have already ruled him out.

So, now the question is who does Jakub play with? I wouldn’t expect him to get real minutes. Effectively, the Wings will probably go with 5 1/2 defensemen in terms of usage tomorrow night.

On Kindl, Meg commented on my earlier post from her perspective as a Griffins season ticket holder:

I’m excited to see Kindl on the Wings roster. I’m not excited to see him off the Griffs roster. He’s been really solid this year so far. Defensibly responsible as well as showing good signs of offense. That’s what I like from my defense. He’s finally started to show why he is so highly thought of by the so-called experts.

I laughed when I read that we now have 5 1/2 D. That's what we had with Lebda in. With Meech we were down to 4 3/4 (Meech is 1/4 a D, Lebda is 1/2). Kindl should get the same number of minutes as Lebda from day 1 and should double Meech.

I know Kindl is young but his talent level is way greater than Meech's.

Since I know zip about GR I was wondering if someone (Meg) could answer this. Is there another D in GR who could get called up? I know Smith (Wisconsin Badgers) is our 2nd best D but he's not available until March or April. Basically is there an ex-prospect who could play the Jeremy Williams Kris Newbury role?

I'm pretty excited to see what Kindl can do. Like with Howard and Leino, we have to see what these Grand Rapids players can do when called up to the big club. One thing I have always faulted the Red Wings is they always hold back the minor league prospects, but that was due to the ovbious depth they have had in the past. But this is a new NHL for the Wings and they have to start playing guys from Grand Rapids.

    Keith,

Well, all of the Griffins current defensemen are on RW contracts, so any of them could be called up. Janik we've already seen, and Kindl we'll see tonight. Those two have been the best d-men this season in my opinion. I'd hate to see Andy Delmore get called up. We've discovered this season that he's called Any Elmore for a reason. He wastes time with the puck, especially on the PP, and he has a tendency toward dumb giveaways. And this is in the AHL. Travis Ehrhardt is a promising looking d-man, but he's nowhere near ready for even a call-up. This is Ehrhardt's first season in the AHL, and he'll need some time. Sebastien Piche has his moments, but he has confidence issues. He's already been sent to Toledo once to gain confidence. He's young and it's also his first year. Logan Pyett had a very good camp this year, but he's generally a defensive liability. Still, he's better than he was last year. Not a call-up necessarily, unless they want to see how he's progressing. This is only his second season in the AHL, but so far I don't see him making it. And last but not least, Sergei Kolosov. He had only 11 points last season, but he's more of a stay-at-home d-man. Honestly, I haven't noticed him a whole lot this season. That can be a good thing with d-men though. He's another big body that the Wings might want to take a look at in the near future. I don't know about this season, though.

So, in short, Kindl will probably be the number one call up all season because of how long he's been in the AHL and the fact that they need to start making decisions about his future. Janik is a really responsible and experienced d-man that I'm guessing will be #2, unless they want to look at some of their prospects. Kolosov is probably most likely after that. Delmore is always a possibility, but not a good one imo. Everyone else needs some time.

As far as Smith, I have not seen him at all. He wasn't even at training camp this year because he was already in school. We're hoping that the Griffins can make it deep into the playoffs this year, and then Smith could come play for them after his season is over.
