Osgood, Maltby Sick; Howard, Miller In; On Columbus

Chris McCosky reports that Chris Osgood and Kirk Maltby are out tonight with the flu. As a result, Jimmy Howard will start his second in two nights and Drew Miller will make his debut as a Red Wing against Vancouver.

This will be a nice test for Howard, who had a pretty solid 25 saves last night in Columbus. He’s unlikely to be quite as sheltered as he was while the Wings were busy drubbing the Jackets to the tune of 9-1. It’ll be interesting to see how he does. Howard apologists were probably thrilled by his performance in Ohio. Something tells me this time might be different.

Daniel Larsson has been called up to back Jimmy up, which may explain the Griffins signing a goalie to a PTO a couple days ago. Depending on how long Osgood’s been sick, this move may have been in the pipeline for a few days. Larsson played yesterday in Grand Rapids. It’s almost too bad the Wings aren’t take the opportunity to give him a look tonight.

Miller will skate on Abdelkader’s wing with Brad May. Should be a pretty abrasive line.

Today’s another busy one at work, so no full game day notes from me again. I do want to say a few things about last night, though:

Even without the crazy score, that may have been the Wings’ most complete game of the season so far. I can only remember a couple shift-long stretches where the Jackets got anything going. Nothing very sustained. Granted, it’s just Columbus, but they’re not a blow off like they used to be. Very good effort by the Wings. The nine goals were a bonus on top of the real reward of the game: watching the Wings work hard.

Seven different scorers for the Wings last night. Can’t expect that kind of balance every night, obviously, but it was good to see others stepping up. I hope Abdelkader’s two goals have the same effect Eaves’ had (i.e. confidence boost). Ditto for Bertuzzi, whose goal was among the strangest I’ve seen.

As with Jimmy, it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the team does tonight. I hope they have something left in the tank. The Canucks are battered, but they have Luongo back and that should make things more difficult. I expect he’ll be better than Mason.

  1. Ryan says:

Even last night, Jimmy's rebounds were as juicy as ever.  He's got to figure out how to absorb some of those shots, and he's got to figure it out fast if he wants to be an NHL goalie–even a backup.

    Ryan,

Agreed. "Pretty solid" probably overstated things. Jimmy's going to have to prove himself to be an entirely different goalie than we think he is if he's going to have a future in Detroit, let alone the League. No one can deny he can play strong games. It's putting them together that's the problem. Even last night was too rebound-happy.

I really think McCollum or Larsson is going to take his spot as the Wings' goalie of the future officially here soon. Both of them are better at their current career stages than Jimmy was when he was there. Whereas Jimmy has some confidence and mental game issues, McCollum oozes confidence (reports my wife, the Griffins season ticket holder). I don't know if Jimmy has the mental toughness to stick around in Detroit: when he screws up, he gets down on himself. There's a reason Osgood's been the most consistent presence on net for the Winsg for so long: he's lets very little phase him. Early reports on McCollumm indicate he's similar.

I think the Jimmy experiment's coming to an end in the next couple months.

Agreed. The key last night for Jimmy was the Wings D actually seemed to care enough to tie up sticks and sweep away pucks on rebounds. There have been times this year where last night's game would have been like 9-6. That said, last night's defensive effort is what the norm should be, where the goalie doesn't have to do it all himself, but instead gets help down low.

The score aside, I hope the Wings realize that when they come out aggressive and attacking, they play a lot better then when they just sit back and play cautious. The 9 goals is cool, but it's not what they should take away from this game. It's the 1 goal against that they need to focus on: when they have the puck, the other team doesn't.

  4. Ryan says:

Sorry that this post is unrelated to the Columbus game, but I was just browsing hockeybuzz.com and read a brief blurb about Detroit in trade talks with Anaheim in an attempt to acquire Giguere. It also states Detroit would offer up a "serious" player for him. Any thoughts on this? Or has anyone else heard this? My intital thought is….yikes…obviously depending on who you give up, plus Giguere hasn't been good for quite a awhile.

  5. Matt Saler says:

    Ryan,

    No way that's true.

  6. John W. says:

Well, to get Giguere we'd have to give up a serious player just to fit him under the cap. It won't happen. If Detroit is gonna go out and sign a big buck goalie, it would have to be better than Giguere.

I've also heard that if Dipietro gets healthy for the Isles, that they are going to offer us a trade for Biron. I don't see that happening either. If we wanted Biron we would have signed him in the summer.

  7. Garth says:

"If we wanted Biron we would have signed him in the summer."

Except that in the summer we were determined to give Howard a shot as the backup. Later this year, we might decide that Howard's had his shot and it's time to get a "real" goalie, hence making a trade for Biron. I don't expect it, but wouldn't be surprised, if Howard falters definitively between now and when/if DiPietro comes back.

And there's NO way we make a go for Giguere. In order to fit him under the cap we'd have to offer someone (or some people) with a similar cap hip. Giguere's cap hit is $6, which means we have to trade Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Rafalski or two of Cleary/Holmstrom/Filpulla/Stuart/Kronwall. ANYONE see that happening?

  8. Justin says:

Holland's philosophy with goalies has always been to never trade for or sign a big name goalie that isn't among the very best in the league, and Giguere isn't one. Either go for the best (Hasek in 2001) or get someone cheap yet serviceable (e.g. Conklin, Osgood). He made a mistake with Joseph, and I don't see him going for Giguere. Especially since the price is just too much.

  9. Megan Saler says:

Well, GR has now released Centomo, their tryout. I don't know if they'll even call Pearce up to cover for Larsson. The Griffs don't play until tomorrow, Danny will sit on the bench tonight, and the Wings don't play tomorrow. I would guess that Larsson will be backing up Howard tonight in Detroit and McCollum tomorrow night in GR. Busy couple of days for him, since he started the Griffins matinee game yesterday.
