Wings Sign May

Update (10:25 AM): Looks like I totally misread the situation. – Matt

Update (9:48 AM): Adrian Dater’s hilarious reaction to this is here. Seriously, what? - Matt

TSN reports that Brad May has been signed to a one-year, $500,000 contract after impressing the Wings in his pro tryout. May’ll be in Grand Rapids as a deterrent to AHL goon types going after the Wings’ valuable young prospects.

I was inititally skeptical and a little disgusted when I first heard the Wings were giving May a look. Then I saw him play against the Leafs in the pre-season and spent what seemed like half the game listening to him being praised up and down.

If seeing him bust his hump on the ice virtually every one of his shifts as well as fight someone to defend a teammate wasn’t enough, the stream of positive comments about the guy and his character put my negative opinion to rest. I’m will to give the guy a chance because he seems to have the right attitude, in spite of my built-in hatred of him as a former Duck, Canuck, etc. and his reputation among fans. All those positive comments from hockey insiders must have some basis, right?

He doesn’t fit in Detroit, but could be a good guy to have around in the playoffs. And don’t underestimate his role in Grand Rapids. We have a young, smallish team there and having a guy like May around will be good as long as he maintains the same attitude he had during his tryout.
