May in Detroit, Abdelkader sent down

Update (1:53 PM): Khan has comments from Babcock on why they have May in Detroit: the Blues pushed them around too much and they’d like to prevent that going forward. Makes sense, obviously, but other players’ll have to be more assertive regardless of whether or not May’s in the lineup. – Matt

Update (12:46 PM): Meg touched on this in the comments, but I want to say something here as well: there is little to no chance this means anything for Helm’s status as an NHLer. I just can’t see them sending him back to the AHL at this point.

If anything, May’s presence in Detroit effects Patrick Eaves, who now has even more competition for a roster spot. May’s skill set is limited, but it is specialized, and isn’t something Eaves can offer. Patrick will have to make himself valuable in other ways or his bid to jumpstart his career will falter. - Matt

Suddenly Dater’s reaction to the May signing isn’t so hilarious: Helene St. James reports that Brad May is now with the Wings, while Justin Abdelkader has been sent back to Grand Rapids.

Wow. This changes my thinking on the May deal altogether. Not because Abdelkader’s being sent down; that was coming anyway (though this is a little early). It’s because I don’t see how May fits in the organization as anything other than as protection in the AHL. They’re really going to give him an NHL roster spot, for any length of time, in the regular season while everyone but Helm (in theory, covered by Eaves if not Abdelkader) is healthy? Wow.

My newfound acceptance of May doesn’t extend this far. He should be in Grand Rapids.

Hmmm, are the Wings expecting a melee tonight being this is the first regular season game after the Kronwall hit on Havlat, who isn't even on the team anymore? I mean, the guy talking the most smack last Spring was Campbell, and I don't think Kronner needs any protection from that pansy.

Maybe they're worried tough guy Patrick Kane will try to take down Franzen for last years mouthguard incident.

Actually I got it, May is in there to break Kopecky's face, or clavical, or, well, any bone for talking trash yesterday.

makes sense to me. May becomes the 12th, 13th, or 14th forward. Allows Abdelkader to get a lot more ice time and allows brad may to sit, seeing as he doesn't need the experience.

I would guess that May will be in tongiht, and Eaves will be in against Washington. May's a tough guy, here to provide a little grit against teams like Chicago, Anaheim, Etc. You know, the dirty teams. Maybe even Pittsburgh, just cause we hate them and they hate the Wings with such a fury that their non-fighters even go after Wings players.

I'm glad that Abby will be back in GR. It's better for him and, quite frankly, better for the Griffins. Abdelkader will score more goals than May for GR.

Once Helm is healthy, it could turn into an interesting rotation. May has a two-way, so he'll probably be sent down quite often. In a short time, he'll probably be able to drive down I-96 with his eyes closed. Helm is loved by the organization and Babcock, so I'd say he's not going anywhere. The question now becomes, where does Eaves fit in? Just from seeing him in training camp, I was excited to have him on the team. Now it looks lik e he'll get very limited ice time.

  4. Garth says:

My assumption would be that, once Helm is healthy, Eaves will be rotated in probably fairly regularlyon the fourth line.  He didn't see any time the first couple games because when you have Abdelkader up from GR, you may as well be playing him or else why do you have him up?  With Helm healthy, May probably plays a couple games this year in Detroit and the rest in GR.  Maltby and Drapes have already made a case for themselves for not sitting, but when Eaves gets the chance I imagine he'll do the same so it seems to me that we'll have one of those fortunate problems during much of the season in which we have too many good players and someone has to sit who wouldn't be if he was playing that well on another team.

    John,

Unfortunately, Kopecky and May didn't have that interaction. Not sure why I've become so bloodthirsty about Tomas, but I would have liked to have seen something like that.

    ryan,

Your thinking makes sense…but the Wings wanted someone to "keep the flies off" last night.

    Megan,

I totally agree with you on May's uses. It sounds like the Wings do, too.

    Garth,

I doubt May plays that few games. Indications seem to be that he'll remain in Detroit and be used in situations such as Meg outlines above.

Agreed with you on Eaves stepping it up and the Wings running out of lineup spots. They're still that good, even if many people no longer accept it.
