10/7 Lineup Update

Update (2:08 PM): Tomas Kopecky’s talking smack before the game, saying “”It’ll be fun, and more fun when we beat them.”

I include this in a lineup update post because there’s a reasonable chance he trips and breaks his clavicle or face, or tears his ACL tonight. Just in case, you know.  - Matt

Update (1:19 PM): Chris McCosky has actual quotes from Babcock on the possible fourth line change, and also puts forth Maltby’s name as a possible scratchee. - Matt

Update (1:12 PM): Also some news on the Chicago side:

Coach Quenneville after practice: Bolland and Eager out tomorrow at DET. Bolland shooting for Saturday vs. COL.

- from the official Blackhawks’ Twitter feed. - Matt

Update (1:04 PM): Turns out there is some news: Helm is definitely out (as expected), reports Ansar Khan, and Eaves might be in.

Eaves worked in on the fourth line and could replace Abdelkder, according to Khan’s speculation. I’m not sure I fully buy that they’d sit Abdelkader, to be honest, given that he’s in Detroit to play, not to sit. Maltby, the typically obvious odd man out, though, didn’t have a bad weekend and would really be getting the shaft if scratched. But his sitting would surprise me less than Abdelkader, given Babs’ history.

All that said, Khan is just going off Babcock saying he might make a change. So, there might not be one at all. - Matt

Nothing new from today’s practice, reports Bruce MacLeod. Derek Meech is still entering the lineup tomorrow night at the expense of Brett Lebda, who is taking the fall for the Wings’ 0-2 start. No other lineup changes, despite the availability of Patrick Eaves.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks may be without Ben Eager (upper body) and Troy Brouwer (lower body) tomorrow. Eager was described as questionable yesterday and Brouwer is day-to-day.

So is Eaves, isn't he? Abdelkader's up because Helm is out. End of story. So if he plays poorly, why not sit him? Admittedly I didn't get to see much of the games this weekend, but from what I've read he's still prone to taking dumb penalties so, if nothing else, it's a lesson that even if you up with the big club you have to be accountable.

    Garth,

    So is Eaves, isn’t he?

Well, yeah, but not in the same way Abdelkader is. The Wings didn't technically need Justin to fill in for Helm precisely because they have Eaves. They opted to take the opportunity to get Abdelkader some reasonable NHL ice time and because of that, it'd make little sense, to me anyway, to sit him. Helm will be back any game now, so Abdelkader's time in Detroit is going to be short enough. Why effectively make it shorter by getting a look at him in a suit rather than on the ice?

Whereas Abdelkader is in Detroit to be gauged with playing time, Eaves is in Detroit to earn a spot. His biggest competition for that spot is not Abdelkader (a special temporary case) or Helm (a Babcock Golden Boy), but Maltby (a non-Babcockian Old Guard Veteran).

Anyway, I didn't think Abdelkader was bad this weekend (dumb tripping penalty aside), so that probably wouldn't be the determining factor.

    Matt,

You make a valid point about why Adelkader is playing with the Wings and not the Griffs. He had a good camp and management wants to see him respond to the NHL. But if you look at it from a game-at-a-time perspective, replacing Abbadabba with Eaves makes more sense than replacing Maltby.

Helm is a game or two away from returning. One game of NHL experience won't make or break Abdelkader. Putting Eaves in what the team should consider a must-win game gives him the chance to earn a spot and kick out Maltby when Helm returns. Abdelkader is a Grif when Helm is back. Maltby's spot is ultimately the revolving door.  But telling Eaves, "We don't want to go down 0-3, you don't want to go down 0-3 and wear a suit until somebody gets hurt. If you want to play, play hard tonight" could start a good competition for that last spot. Two guys trying to earn a spot on the same line could just be the spark the team misses in Helm. Maltby has played well and if Eaves wants to the a regular Red Wing he'll bring his A game too.

I think Babcock needs to make one more change besides throwing Meech in for Brett "Look Ma' No Hands!"Lebda.
