Datsyuk Skates with Filppula and Hossa

Update (3:06 PM): MacLeod has it from Babcock that Datsyuk is a game day decision (more here, as well as stuff on Draper and Abdelkder). Based on reports of how he looked in practice, it sounds like he’ll be in, barring a setback. Also, more on Rafalski and Holmstrom here- Matt

Quick update because the news is too good not to pass along: Bruce MacLeod reports from practice: “Datsyuk is practicing as though he’s playing Game 4, centering Filppula and Hossa.” Not a lock, but it’s looking good. More detail from Bruce here.

Also, Draper’s skating with the fourth line as the center, instead of Abdelkader, and Rafalski is skipping out (though expect him to play). Sucks for Abdelkader, but who do you sit if you want Draper back in? My choice: Samuelsson, but his size is helpful. A tough one. And no Holmstrom, either. He took a beating last night, so that’s not surprising. I hope the day off can get him going, if he’s healthy enough to play again.

Personally, I'd sit Leino and keep Abby in there, but I don't think Babcock likes playing Abby if he can't play at center, and with Drapes in at center, he'd be a winger.

    As for Pav…

    WOOHOO!!

Hossa's chance at another 2 goal Game 4 just increased exponentially.

  2. John W. says:

Actually, re-reading that if Fil is on a line with Hoss and Pav, then who is the 3rd line center? Would think Babs would have put Drapes as 3rd line center and left Abby as 4th line center, and sitting Leino…

    John,

I'd guess it looks something like

    Franzen-Zetterberg-ClearyFilppula-Datsyuk-HossaSamuelsson-Helm-HolmstromLeino-Draper-Maltby

  4. John W. says:

Gah, don't mind me, I'm an idiot, I forgot about Darren freaking Helm. Man I feel silly…

    Bruce has the lines as:

    Franzen-Zetterberg-Cleary

    Filppula-Datsyuk-Hossa

    Hudler-Helm-Samuelsson

    Leino-Draper-Maltby

Looks like Homer may have twisted his knee possibly on that awkward fall into the boards.

    Still can't believe I forgot about Helmer..grrrrr

  5. Matt Saler says:

Wow, I totally forgot about Hudler… shows how unnoticeable he's been in this series, eh?

MacLeod's lines obviously make a lot more sense. I wonder what happens to them if Holmstrom's able to come back. Leino'll be the odd man out, I'd think.

  6. John W. says:

I honestly could care less if Homer plays again this series. All the guy seems to do is turn the puck over and hasn't really caused much trouble in front of the net this entire post season.

  7. Jason says:

Agreed about Happy Hudler needing to be more present; I've found myself almost surprised when I actually notice him on the ice, in this series and the last one. The thing about him though is he always seems to be more effective playing 5-on-5 on the top lines; relatedly, agreed about Holmstrom; I was hoping when Datsyuk's offensive funk carried over into the Chicago series that Babs would stick Holmstrom on the third or fourth units and move Hudler with Datsyuk and either Franzen or Cleary, because having two guys with hands for Datsyuk to pass to is better than one, especially if they can pass it back and setup chances for Pavel too. Not to say Homer isn't trying his ass off out there; with the exception of maybe Hank, Helm, and Cleary, I don't think anyone on Detroit looks like they're working harder. But he can't skate, and I find myself cringing everytime the puck comes to him in the neutral zone, as he always seems to find a way to bobble it, then forces a crummy pass which the opposition rightfully picks off with ease. The most telling thing, however, about Homer's effectiveness these playoffs is the simple lack of interference penalties. When Homer's doing his job right, he invariably takes goalie interference penalties–some legit, some not. But that's always the measure of his presence. I think I can only remember one… I'm not sure. But it doesn't seem like enough, anyhow. So maybe he just needs to take a ridiculous interference penalty whenever he next plays to get things rolling again, who knows. Or maybe it's just a combination of effective defense, the wear and tear of the playoffs, and the lingering effects of the ailments that sidelined him in the regular season… maybe he's just getting to the point where his effectiveness is coming to an end.

But either way, even if he is healthy enough to play, he doesn't belong on the top units, at least at even strength right now, and with Dats and Drapes coming back, it should give Babcock further pause to reconsider his lines.

Generally speaking, game four will be a great time to finally pull the Juggernaut Red Wings out of the shrinkwrap. Hat tricks from Hossa, Zetterberg and Franzen. 1 goal and 9 assists for Datsyuk. Lidstrom and Rafalski +12 each. Osgood a perfect 3/3 on saves. Kronwall and Stuart tossing so many crushing open ice hits that the Pens have to setup a triage unit in their training room. Fleury gets so badly abused that he has to sit out a month for an "upper body injury" (ie, broken pride). And then after all that I want Babs at the post-game to say, in earnest, "I don't think we spent enough time in Pittsburgh's zone, we have to play better in game five."

That's reasonable to hope for, right? No? :-)

  8. Megan Saler says:

    Jason,

I think it's perfectly reasonable. Who's scoring the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth goals? I say Helm, Cleary and Lidstrom.

  9. Megan Saler says:

My bad. Datsyuk has the tenth goal. So Helm and Lidstrom.

  10. Jason says:

    Haha, works for me, Megan!
