Respect for Aaron Downey = Zero

I know, it’s shocking to see on a Red Wings blog. I used to like the guy. I thought he was a good energy player, great for the locker room, and an all-around good guy. I liked having him on the Griffins because he brought leadership and a toughness that they lacked. He also brought a lot of experience.

All of that died tonight. Downey made a dangerous, stupid hit on a defenseless Moose player. He got called for it. He was very unhappy about getting called, so he skated passed another Moose player and two-handed him right in the gut. It was disgusting. I am not a fan of that type of play and don’t want it anywhere near either of my teams. He belongs on a team like Calgary, apparently. This was after a game in which he reportedly elbowed the opposing goaltender in the head, for which he should have been automatically suspended. Downey got two minutes for the dirty hit, and a ten minute misconduct. I wish they had suspended him, because then at least the Griffins could have dressed another player. With Downey in the box for ten minutes, they had only 17 skaters, and they are not that deep. Downey did nothing but hurt them tonight. I’m glad he got both the penalty and the misconduct. That sort of thing has no place in hockey, no matter who is doing it.

CALL HIM UP! The Wings could use this type of toughness against the Ducks.

Pinhead, the Moose gave our 18 year defenseman a concussion with a dirty hit. The officiating in the AHL sucks, the referee missed the call. Downey was doing what he had to.

Way to give your argument an instant invalidation, Rick. Pinhead? Are we in grade school?

Your argument is invalid anyway, even without the childish insult. Who cares what the Moose did? Downey's behavior was unacceptable under any circumstances. I've been a fan of the guy since he's been in the organization, but that kind of stuff is bush league and not Red Wings hockey, which the Griffins are supposed to be emulating. It doesn't matter what the trigger, that kind of response is completely out of line.

It's hockey, sounds like you're a basketball fan. I suppose you think Bob Probert was not a good Red Wing either? Have you ever been to  Griffins game? It's not Red Wing hockey, it's the AHL. I have season tickets. In fact, I met Downey outside of VanAndel before a game. He took the time to call me and my son over to talk to us. He's great guy that was protecting his teammates. And I'm glad the Wings have you to decide what Red Wings Hockey really is. I say the Wings are getting too soft. They have to depend on Griffins like Ericksson to act as enforcers. If they loose to Anaheim, it is because of the softness. Sounds like self righteous "fans" like you are too soft.  I bet you're happy the Brown got nothing for Hudler. If Downey was in that game, Brown would have taken 20 stitches.

  9. Megan Saler says:

    Rick,

For your information, I am a loyal season ticket holder who has attended almost every single game this season. I know what I'm talking about. I've also met Downey, and as I said in my post, I thought he was a good guy. It's not that I don't believe that this sort of crap is acceptable in just Red Wings hockey, I don't think it should be in any hockey game anywhere. Despite what some people may think, hockey is not about going out and seeing how badly you can beat on the other team.

Obviously, you know nothing about the Red Wings. They're soft, eh? Have you watched this series at all? They are hitting left and right. They are a tough team. You have to be to win the Cup, which they did last year. Tough and dirty are, believe it or not, NOT the same thing.

I agree with standing up for your teammates. But there's a right way to do it. Challenge the guy to a fight. I love fighting and would never want it out of the game. It makes guys like Downey have to be responsible for what they do on the ice.

As far as the Brown hit on Hudler, I'm betting your one of the idiots that thought it was a "clean check." Because if you thought that was dirty at all, you cannot argue that what Downey did was not dirty.

Rick, why ya tryin' ta be slick? maybe the stripz shoulda brought tha whistle outta they pocket… MB really cooked Kronwall's egg, eh? hope 2 Prongs dont knock Pavel out wit his 'bows! J-Hills wit da 45 stopz, he sayin' "aint nuthin but a g thang baby, I'm gonna git Lord Stanley's" what'd I tell ya bout mah hustlin' n*gga Scotty-N? i bettah fill in fo Miss Cleo! Probert wuz a b*tchin Hawk too, some ya Wobbly Wheel fans need ta recognize ya rivalz. comparing Wheels with Griffins are 2 diff thangz. jus like Meg said, cheap azz hits, kinda like 55's……. who dat again?? starts wit a "K"… Big Georgie woulda curb-stomped Downey. or maybe MB could be tha bran' new Claude Lemieux. bet ya couldnt be hatin' on a univ of mi grad!
