So it’s Columbus

The Wings will open the playoffs against Steve Mason and Company. On the surface, that really sucks because Mason’s had their number all season. But maybe Mason being a known quantity will result in a positive ending. This won’t be a Giguere-in-2003-like surprise.

And Meg points out that if the Wings are going to play well this postseason, they can beat Columbus. If they’re not going to play well, it’s better to not have to stay up late to watch it. I think a stiff test against a team in our time zone will be a good thing for the Wings.

So now we know what they’re up against. Playoff hockey’s coming!

At least in their last meeting, the Wings won and completely shut down Rick Nash. Plus I really like the sound of the Ducks and Sharks beating the living daylights out of each other. In my opinion, the only 2 teams in the West that have a shot of beating Detroit in a 7 game series, if they play up to their potential, are those 2 teams, and now only 1 of them will be left after round 1.

Great point, John. That'll be a heck of a battle. Whoever comes out will be both beat up and amped up. If it's Anaheim, our second round will be, uh, exciting.

Exciting isn't exactly the word I would have chosen…

Good point on not having to stay up late if the Wings aren't playing well. The only thing worse than watching the Wings lose is watching them lose at midnight (or even later if its a long ot game like Game 5 of the Finals last year), and the only thing worse than watching them lose late at night is watching them lose late at night to the Ducks! Not to mention, if the Wings had played the Ducks, and had they beaten them, its a very good chance they would have had to go out west for every round of the Conference playoffs, as there's a good chance they would have played either the Canucks or Flames in round 2, and the Sharks in round 3, that would have been brutal! Its essentially what they had to do in 2007, when they had the Flames, Sharks, and Ducks.

Ugh, I'm really nervous about this first round matchup. I probably wouldn't feel any better if it were the Ducks. I just hope the Wings can cure their bad habits and get some competent goaltending and contain Rick Nash.

The combo of Nash and Mason will probably be able steal the Jackets 1 or 2 games. What better not happen, is Mason steals a few games, and Nash steals a few other games. That's really the only chance Columbus has (barring a complete meltdown from the Wings) as they really don't have enough scoring to beat Detroit, unless Nash scores a hat trick in every game. Detroit's game plan has to be what it was in the final meeting of the year, blanket Nash all night long, and make someone else score goals.

I'm predicting the Wings win games 1 and 2, Columbus takes Game 3 just on emotion of their first ever playoff home game, then the Wings come back and break their backs in Game 4 and wrap it up in Game 5, at home for once, unlike last year against Dallas and Pittsburgh.
