A Joke

The penalty shot call in the final minute of yesterday’s game was as bad a call as I have ever seen. Kronwall’s defensive play there was impeccable, and completely within the rules. The deep ref had absolutely no business taking the outcome of the game in his hands like that. A straight penalty would have been a terrible call, but the penalty shot was just appalling. The official’s job is to manage the game, not determine its outcome. Unbelievable idiocy on his part.

That said, it wouldn’t even be an issue had the Wings received something even approaching competent goaltending from Conklin. The Hawks won 4-2, and all three goals Conklin allowed were crap. Including the penalty shot. Of course, the team didn’t exactly play top-flight hockey either.

Here’s hoping the outcome of today’s game is different.

Family stuff at my in-laws will keep me from seeing much, if any, of the game.

Didn't get to see much of today's game, so I'll just say, and I think this reflects the team's sentiment as well, thank God the regular season is over. I just hope they remember where that "switch" is.

  2. RON says:

Hopefully, Mike Illitch is aware that Jacques Lemaire is available next season and should pay 'em what he wants. Surely, he can outbid Montreal for his services. Let Babcock go to work for a bottled water company like Perrier or Evian or Poland Springs. Something he knows something about and failry good at. This total collapse would've never happened under Bowman. Oh, that's right…….I just remembered that he works for the Blackhawks. No wonder.

  3. John W. says:

The same Blackhawks that are going to get a big time reality check from the Flames. I don't see how its a total collapse before they've even played a playoff game yet. I mean, your basing this on games where we had Chelios playing foward instead of Hossa and a game without Nick.

  4. RON says:

You're loaded with excuses. They had 1st place overall with 5 games to play at their fingertips and now they have to settle for 3rd. Now, that's a collapse if I ever saw one.

  5. Matt Saler says:

This was a typical late season loss, and could have happened under any Wings coach of the past 20 years. The Wings were already in "health conservation" mode, playing a guy like Ericsson 17 minutes and mixing up the units.

I labeled these two games "must win," but that was really from a fan's perspective. Two wins would have helped my confidence. I should have realized that the team was already looking ahead to the playoffs and adjusting their play with the postseason in mind.

I personally think a couple wins would have helped the Wings get momentum going into the playoffs, but I can't really blame them for minding their physical condition for the playoffs by not going full tilt. This wasn't so much a collapse as a washing of hands of the regular season.

Besides, end of season momentum of the kind we fans would haved liked can't be built over just a couple games. A team like St. Louis that has been playing at a playoff level for over a month now has momentum, but a couple of wins over Chicago really wouldn't do it. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Oh, and any suggestion that the Wings should go after Lemaire would be idiotic even if he weren't retiring from the Wild and from coaching.

  6. John W. says:

No, Ron, I'm just not a bandwagon jumper and I have a memory longer than a week. I understand its a long regular season, and for a team that just won the Cup, its hard to keep up the intensity for 82 games, when all they really care about is the playoffs.

  7. Megan Saler says:

I'd have to agree with Matt on this one, Ron. And with John. There was nothing the Wings would gain from throwing everything they have at Chicago. They were guaranteed second, couldn't do better, and had no effect on the team they are going to play. If we were gonna play Chicago in the playoffs, it would be a different story.

These two games also meant a lot more to Chicago than to us. They are a young, inexperienced team. They haven't learned how to just switch into playoff mode. Sometimes the Wings aren't as good at it either, but they can. Also, Chicago has pride at stake. Sure, we do'nt like to lose, but beating Chicago doesn't make us puff out our chests and feel really good about ourselves. That's what a win over the Wings does for a team like Chicago. It gives them confidence.
