TSN: Franzen, Wings agree to terms

Update (2:07 PM): The Franzen signing has been confirmed, though for 11 years, not 9 or 10. – Matt

Update (12:51 PM): Ansar Khan is the first of the Detroit media to chime in, but all he has is TSN’s information. He has not received confirmation from the team. - Matt

TSN is reporting that the Wings and Johan Franzen have agreed to contract extension, which their sources say is for 9 to 10 years. TSN’s sources provide no further details. Note that this doesn’t mean a contract is signed.

If this is true, it’s definitely great news. However, the Detroit media outlets aren’t reporting anything yet, so it’s probably worth taking this with a grain of salt until they do.

TSN is usually very reliable about this kind of thing, so it's probably a done deal.

  2. Kyle says:

TSN is probably right — I'd probably trust them over the Detroit outlets.

Either way, wow.  Nine years, ten years, insane.  Sounds like it'll be like the Zetterberg deal where the cap hit will be lowered by low salaries at the end of the contract.  I just can't wait to see the numbers, this is really key for our cap situation going into the next decade.

But if it's in the $3-$4 million range.. we definitely have room for Hossa too.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.

If this is true, and it probably is, a long term deal probably means a smaller cap hit per year, possibly opening the door for keeping Hossa once the playoffs are over.

    Ryan and Kyle,

Yes, TSN is generally reliable so "take it with a grain of salt" is probbly going too far. However, their piece only cited unnamed sources and in those cases it's usually better to wait until confirmation from named sources (at least "the team," if not "Holland") before getting excited.

And I wouldn't trust them over the Detroit outlets. Despite it being fashionable to bash our journalists these dys, they're still the best source of information we have on the team.

    John,

The length of the deal and the likely corresponding small cap hit definitely offer hope on the Hossa front. I'd still consider it a long shot, but maybe Holland's aim just improved.
