Pathetic

Two Saturdays. Two horrific performances by the Red Wings defense. Where are their heads these days?

Last week, they choked on the road. This week they can’t put on a half-decent performance in front of the home fans?

Before anyone blames Osgood for this one, let me set the record straight. Goals one through four were bad defense, pure and simple. The first two were deflections by uncovered players, while the third and fourth were awful turnovers. We missed the fifth because we had the TV on another channel for intermission and misjudged the start of the period. Goal six could have been stopped. Goal seven was another bad turnover.

Now, you’d like to see Osgood steal a game here and there, but that becomes difficult when your team provides zero support and when your best players are coughing the puck up like Andreas Lilja on his worst nights.

Unbelievable. There are 16 games left in the season and we’re being subjected to this crap? All year, I’ve been confident in the team’s ability to step it up when it counts, even though they’ve been in a season-long funk for some inexplicable reason. Well, my confidence is starting to crack. Time is running out for a turnaround.

I don’t know what’s wrong with this group, but they’d better figure it out soon or they’re headed for a first-round bounce. And it could come at the hands of one of the teams to which they’ve surrendered 8 goals over the past week.

Thanks for the post.  I'm on vacation and not in the hockey state of mind, so naturally I needed something to read.  Immediate clarification was needed.  I don't feel any better, but at least I'm informed.  8-2 to the Blue Jackets …. Absolutely unreal score.

I hear you bigtime, this team is too talented to have this happen so late in the season.  It's been up and down all year and every time it looks like they're rounding the corner they hit a all new low.

I definitely agree Osgood was not at fault for the first goals — and it's tough to be hard on the others when the game was in hand, especially with Rafalski gift-wrapping goals every shift.  It seemed like he'd been rounding a corner recently as well, and knowing him, this isn't going to help his confidence at all.  It's tough to say where it goes from here.  Detroit runs into hot goaltending every year in the playoffs and they won't get anywhere if they're trying to win games while letting up 4/5 goals.

It's inexusable, but that's what makes me think it's not going to happen again.  It happens once, you evaluate, you stay calm, you focus on what's ahead.  It happens again, you re-adjust, and focus on what you're doing wrong.  This can't happen again.  8 goals is one thing, but this team cannot just take nights off like this.  Babcock has to get this team serious again.
