Ericsson and Downey Up, Leino and Helm Down

Update (2:16 PM): Ansar Khan has a few more details, including a better assessment of Holmstrom’s return timetable. It looks like Ericsson may be getting more than a couple games.  - Matt

The official site reports that the team has recalled Jonathan Ericsson and Aaron Downey, and sent Ville Leino and Darren Helm back to Grand Rapids.

The move will allow the Wings to get a look at their top defensive prospect before Holmstrom returns, something they’d been unable to do until recently due to Ericsson’s slow-to-heal wrist injury.

Ericsson will likely play at least one if not both of the Wings next two games, but I’d be surprised if he’s here much longer than that. Homer is about to return and at that point, they won’t have room. Lilja’s hand injury opens up a spot in the defense, as does Meech’s horrific outing Saturday.

As for Downey, I’m not sure why they brought him up instead of keeping Helm around. Helm offers more at just a slighly larger cap hit.

Agree with it or not, I think they brought Downey up because of his attitude on the bench.

    Ryan,

I definitely don't disagree with that. Downey's a great guy to have around for that reason. As much as this team could use Helm's hockey skill right now, maybe Downey's attitude is something they need more.
