Megan and I never made it Up North thanks to car trouble. So we had the pleasure of watching the Wings get demolished by the Nashville Predators in what has to be one of the top five most embarrassing losses in team history. Certainly among their worst since franchise pride was restored 20 years ago at the start of the post-Dead Things era.
With all the Wings’ success over the years, a night like last night was bound to happen eventually. It’s still unacceptable. It doesn’t matter that they played the night before. What matters is they allowed 8 goals to one of the worst offensive teams in hockey. It’s horrific, especially for a team that wants to repeat.
We’ve been waiting all season for the team to wake up and finally play to its potential. Maybe last night was the call. I can only hope so, because there are two ways for this squad to go after a night like last night’s: up, or way, way down. In this case, keeping things at the same level they were prior to the game would fall under the “down category.”
I know this team has heart and a will to win. Now let’s see if they can apply those attributes by taking the shame of a loss like that and turning it into some emotion down the stretch. This is not a game that can just be written off. They have to learn from it.
