Howard Returned to Grand Rapids

I missed this last night because I had to take the dogs out, but George Malik reports that the FS Detroit crew said Jimmy Howard was returning to Grand Rapids after the game, something Ansar Khan first reported Friday. The AHL transaction wire confirms the move. He’s expected to play this afternoon for the Griffins, relieving Daniel Larsson, who’s played the last two games sick in Howard’s absence.

Expect Larsson to get the call this week, as Chris Osgood’s 10-day hiatus continues. Howard could be brought back, but it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to shuttle him back and forth like that, so it seems to me that a Larsson recall is the next step.

That would be nice, Larsson seems more and more like the future of the club these days, and Howard more and more like damaged goods. Given Osgood's slump I suppose I'm glad we have Conklin, but oh, what a year of NHL training would have done for Howard… and now, if Osgood really isn't starter material, we're just another behind on rearing our next starting goaltender.

Good to here from you again, Pete. How're things at your end? YiG is missed.

It's hard not to think that way, that's for sure. Larsson's done in one year what it took Jimmy three to do: establish himself at the AHL level and that sets him apart. The question now is whether he can keep it up into next season or if he's just a flash in the pan.

but oh, what a year of NHL training would have done for Howard…

I hear you there, though I don't regret the Wings' goaltending decisions too much. Four Cups with three goalies isn't bad, however much their goaltending development was hurt.

if Osgood really isn’t starter material, we’re just another behind on rearing our next starting goaltender.

Regardless of what the crowd at A2Y might say, I think the jury's still out on that. I tend to think Osgood isn't done as starter, but we'll only know if he comes back hard after this break. Or if Conklin stumbles and Oz steps up.
