Wings 5, Predators 3

… This one was far closer than it should have been. The Wings got thirty more shots on net than Nashville did, but didn’t put the game out of reach until the final minute. It wasn’t goaltending. It was a casual attitude about finishing the job, an attitude the Predators picked up on and exploited. It could have easily been 5-4 Nashville.

Throughout the second period, the game was far too wide open as the Wings relaxed their grip. I’m not sure what happened, but the team obviously lost focus for a while. Fortunately, they were able to snap back to focus before the Preds stole one.

… I had no idea who the heck Joel Ward was before tonight, but you can bet I won’t forget how easily he beat Brian Rafalski on his second of the night. He also caught Conklin flat footed and beat him to the right post on a play that brought the Predators within one for the second time.

… Marian Hossa continues to make his case as the winner of the Franzen vs. Hossa contest. Every game Franzen is out due to injury increases Hossa’s value in my mind. I’m a big Franzen fan, but he’s shown a tendency to injury, whereas Hossa’s consistent presence in the lineup isn’t that far off from Lidstrom’s.

Hossa has lately been a one-man show out there, with Leino and Filppula playing keep up at times. I’m leaning more towards hoping the Wings sign him every game, as long as he takes a reasonable salary, of course.

… Pavel Datsyuk also had a strong night: two goals (one empty-netter) and plenty of perfect examples of why he’s such a great player. He does so many little things that just wow you on a nightly basis that it’s difficult to appreciate just how complete  a player he really is.

… It was good to see Henrik Zetterberg notch a couple and reach 20 goals on the season. Here’s hoping he can pick up the pace a bit and finish with 15+ more.

… Leino still looks good, but Helm was more noticeable tonight. Both players would make any other team in the NHL, no problem.

… Steve Sullivan obviously has a ways to go in his return to the NHL. He was dangerous in spots, but is not the same player he once was.

… Pekke Rinne looks like the real deal. Of course, so did Dan Ellis.

… The Predators shot themselves in the foot a number of times by taking bad penalties. The Wings only capitalized twice, but the disruption in their line rolling definitely made a comeback more difficult.

… At the other end of things, I’m going to mark down one power play goal against as a relapse in penalty killing for the Wings. Remember, the Predators had the 29th ranked power play heading in to the game

… Conklin looked pretty sharp overall and didn’t stand much chance on two of the Predators’ three goals (both long and though crowds), but my guess is he sits Thursday.

… The Wings will have to be more focused against Minnesota. If they don’t hold on to a lead against the Wild, they risk losing it altogether, even with all their offensive talent.

They’ve still got work to do.

I’m no hockey expert, but a few thoughts nonetheless :)

    1. The second Ward goal was beautiful, but that wasn’t exactly the best defensive effort by Rafalski.

    2. This season Hossa’s goal per game average is 0,57 compared to Franzen’s 0,47. That’s an estimated 46 vs. 39 goals per season, so if Franzen is healthy he ‘could’ challenge Hossa in scoring. But that’s of course an awful big IF, and for that reason alone I agree with you that Hossa should be the no. 1 priority. However I’m not sure (despite all his magic skills) that Holland can fit in Hossa, unless he decides to trade someone like Cleary, Filppula or Stuart. Not that I want either to be traded!

    3. But if someone is trade then it’s good to hear that Helm and Leino looks fine out there. We’ll see a lot more of those guys next year.

    4. Was that really an interference penalty on Kopecky? I’ve only seen the highlights, but sure looks like he got a nice little push in the back.

    5. One final and more general thought! Datsyuk’s contract is ridiculous. One of the 5 best players in the league and he’s signed for another 5 years for 6,7m a year? Perhaps considered a gamble when they signed him, but it sure paid off!

Finally – I’m quite a fan of On The Wings, so please keep the posts coming!

    stytzer,

That's why I'll never forget it! Raffy looked like a rookie on that one, which is unlike him (at least this season).

However I’m not sure (despite all his magic skills) that Holland can fit in Hossa,

Yeah, it's all on Hossa himself. If he isn't willing to take a pay cut, the Wings won't be able to keep him in any case.

I'd rather not trade Cleary, Filppula, or Stuart either. Cleary and Stuart have larger contracts that would make that tougher, anyway.

    3. But if someone is trade then it’s good to hear that Helm and Leino looks fine out there. We’ll see a lot more of those guys next year

I hope we'll see Leino! He's still got to be signed to another contract since he's on just a one-year deal now, but he wants to play in Detroit so that hopefully won't be a problem.

as that really an interference penalty on Kopecky? I’ve only seen the highlights, but sure looks like he got a nice little push in the back.

That's possible – I was writing notes at the time and didn't look too closely. Kopecky certainly didn't run Rinne over on purpose, but I guess when you bowl a goalie over like that, you're going to get called.

One final and more general thought! Datsyuk’s contract is ridiculous. One of the 5 best players in the league and he’s signed for another 5 years for 6,7m a year? Perhaps considered a gamble when they signed him, but it sure paid off!

    No argument here!

I’m quite a fan of On The Wings, so please keep the posts coming!

    Thanks! I'll do my best.

    Hey Matt,

I'm with you on the Hossa thing.  Franzen emerged last year as the purest scorer we've had since Shanahan, only to be matched by Hossa this year.  For me it comes down to how much he wants to be here.  Franzen will obviously be cheaper but his price could be run up on the open market.  He definitely doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would try to milk Detroit for all they're worth though, he's really modest in the way he talks about his success.

Hossa on the other hand could become one of the highest paid players in the league if he wanted to, as he could have last offseason.  He says all the right things about negotiations, and genuinely seems to admire Zetterberg for how much he gave to keep the team together.  If they could get him wrapped up at $7 million or less I'm all for it — it puts us tight for next season but is managable once Lidstrom's deal comes off the books (assuming he retires or takes a decent paycut).  He's a world class player and he really fits in the system.

It's a hard choice to make but Franzen's health is a question.  It's tough to call him injury prone — he's like Kronwall was a few years ago, it's never the same kind of injury, always something different, but still, it reflects on the somewhat reckless way he plays.  That's not a bad thing, but it's definitely something you think about when you're deciding which elite scoring player to keep.

    Kyle,

Franzen may not be the kind of guy who'd milk the Wings for all they're worth, but if he ends up waiting until July 1st, it could get interesting.

He's a guy who may never have such a good chance for a big contract again and may decide to take a big offer from another team, should one come along. Hossa has a good idea what he's worth and has already shown a willingness to take less, as you point out. Will Franzen pass the test in the same way? I hope so, but wouldn't necessarily blame him if he doesn't.

Yeah, Franzen's style is a definite factor in his injuries. Hossa doesn't play the same style, which could account for his apparent durability. But Johan may need to done his style down a bit if his body continues to show it's not cut out for it.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward Hossa, but mainly because he's a proven worldclass player and I'm still unsure whether or not Franzen is really going to be a scorer in the Shanahan mold.
