Leino, Downey Called Up

Update (11:50 AM): MacLeod now reports that Downey, not Leino, will play tonight. The reason is probably, as Dennis points out in the comments, Steve Ott.

Leino will make his regular season NHL debut Saturday in DC. - Matt

Bruce MacLeod reports that Ville Leino and Aaron Downey have been called up from Grand Rapids. The move is made possible by the fact that Brad Stuart (and his $3.75 million salary) has been placed on the LTIR and must sit out at least nine more games (or 24 total days) before he can return.

Leino can enter the lineup tonight in Zetterberg’s absence, but the reason for Downey’s presence isn’t immediately apparent.

    Dennis,

Well yeah, you'd think, but who sits? but who sits?

  2. Baroque says:

Maybe Downey was also called up just because he's taken the situation so well when he could have easily pouted and made a fuss – although I don't think that seems to be his personality, and he probably regained his normal cheerful attitude as soon as he put the understandable initial disappointment behind him.

As for who sits – no clue. Hudler because he's a smaller guy and might get squashed? Wally because he hasn't been scoring lately? Franzen back out with hurt something-or-other?

  3. Matt Saler says:

    Baroque,

Yeah, I was thinking something along those lines. Downey's attitude would be a great addition to the lockerroom here in the mid-season stretch. He may help provide the guys with the morale push they need to really kick it into high gear going forward.

  4. DennisDubay says:

Downey called up to keep Ott and his games at bay, me thinks, Matt. Will be excited to see if Leino can rev this team up a bit.
