IwoCPO questions the decision to start Chris Osgood Saturday rather than Ty Conklin.
For my part, I admit I thought it odd at the time when Babock started Osgood Wednesday in Anaheim, thus setting the stage for a Saturday appearance, but it wasn’t the worst decision in retrospect. I thought Osgood acquitted himself well (with a few exceptions) in San Jose while his teammates did not. The skaters gave him very little support (at points zero), so questioning Osgood’s starting misses the mark a bit.
As for the comment Iwo mistakenly attributes (now corrected) originally attributed to me in his post, I will say my confidence in Osgood wasn’t too high that night, but that’s more because I was down on the team as a whole as the game went on, rather than anything against Osgood in particular. I did say in my post-game comments that I thought he could have stopped one or two more shots, but that doesn’t mean the Wings haven’t played poorly in front of him in two of his last three starts.
If there’s a goalie controversy in Detroit, that’s where it lies: in how the team plays in front of their two goalies. At this point, it’s as though most nights the Wings bring their A game for Conklin, but their B game or lower for Osgood. Not sure what’s going on there.
