Ansar Khan has it from Franzen himself that a strained hip, not a groin issue, caused him to leave the game last night.
Apparently, it was an issue even before the puck drop, and thus wasn’t caused by the Thornton hit, directly or indirectly, after all. Franzen attempted to play through it, but the condition worsened until Piet Van Zant pulled the plug in the third. Johan told Khan he doesn’t know the cause of the strain.
His status for Tuesday’s game is in question. He couldn’t commit to practicing tomorrow, though Khan says in his post-game report that Franzen will be reevaluated during the skate. Even if he’s technically able to play in Phoenix, it wouldn’t be surprising if the team opts to sit him and give him an extended All Star Break for rest purposes.
