On Larsson and Howard

Matthew Wuest of Red Wings Central has an update on goaltending prospect Daniel Larsson.

Wuest notes that Larsson has had a strong North American start, an observation that jives with what I hear  from my wife, a Griffins season ticket holder. Larsson has outplayed Jimmy Howard by a fair margin most of the season and may have the Wings rethinking their future goaltending plans.

Howard has picked up his play lately, but if he doesn’t finish the AHL season on a very strong streak, he may be out as the future Detroit netminder. With Thomas McCollum coming up in the system and Larsson already performing like a top-5 AHL goaltender, Howard’s relatively slow development may come back to bite him.

I saw Jimmy play New Year’s Eve, when he posted a shutout against a relatively anaenmic Iowa Chops team. He looked pretty solid, but I’m still not wholly convinced he’s NHL ready or able to be so by next season. His recent strong play has seemingly been brought on by the competition Larsson has provided and I find  it a little disturbing that it’s taken an upstart backup to motivate the man.

I’d mark it down to Quincey-esque disappointment at being in the AHL once again, but this has been a continuing theme with Howard since he left college. He has yet to reach the required dominance in the minors after two full seasons and over half of a third. Any disapointment over being the third man in the systerm should provide motivation, not send him to a spiral of average goaltending.

Larsson has looked like a capable goalie in just his first season outside Sweden, something all the more impressive when you consider the difference between North American rinks and European. That demonstrates a definite level of mental toughness, and from where I sit, it’s difficult not to give Larsson the advantage over Howard in that particular category right now.

I always thought that Howard looked good, not great, when I used to go to Griffins games all the time for the past two seasons – of course somehow I always seemed to pick games that they lost, which I'm sure didn't help, but even so. It was never that he looked particularly bad, but it never really looked that much like he was improving all that much throughout his time in the AHL, either.

I have no idea, but I wonder if having "the future of Red Wings goaltending" bandied about for so many years got him a little too content in thinking the spot was as good as his?

It's definitely an interesting situation, I'm on board with that "AHL boredom" sentiment with Howard.

He's turned it on in a big way the past month or so, but just the fact that he got off to another slow start when the one big thing he needed work on was consistency was a little bit disheartening. He can't afford any more lapses this season if he wants to assure Detroit he belongs there next season. Larsson's been red hot and I think that competition will really light a fire under Howard 2nd half, he's not just playing to impress Detroit anymore, he's playing for a starting job.

It's hard to really fault a guy who's done everything else they've asked him though, in the AHL for the past four years, he's cut weight, worked a lot on his lateral mobility, etc., and he's looked pretty good in the shots he has gotten in the NHL — which is all that matters, really. He deserves a look, but I think he is becoming more aware that he'll be guaranteed nothing, he needs to take that final step himself.

As a Wings fan, it's nice to see this kind of talent in the system, with no fully developed goalies since Osgood really, to have Howard on the cusp of possibly making an impact, Larsson as dominating a rookie as the AHL's seen in some time, and McCollum putting up great numbers on an average team in the OHL (and hopefully, forgetting about the past two weeks at the WJHC).

Steph, I agree – Howard may have been lulled into complacency by getting the mantle of Future Starter so early. Or he just hit a wall from a development standpoint and can't improve any more. I don't know which is more disturbing.

Kyle, Jimmy may feel he can pull it off with another strong showing in camp. The sudden appearance of Ty Conklin had to throw him off a bit, but he may feel he's got another shot next season, regardless of what he does in the AHL this year.

You're right, he's been a model prospect from many standpoints and has looked good at the NHL. So we know he's got the basic drive and ability to turn it on. I'm more concerned with his consistency. Doing it at the NHL level in single-game situations matters, but so does doing it nightly at the AHL level.

Yeah, the Wings are in pretty good shape from a future goaltending standpoint. Definitely a nice thing to see as we look to the next generation Detroit team.

Matt, I count myself among the big Howard fans ever since I saw him on TV playing for UMaine in the NCAAs. He was out-frickin-standing. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that he was a Red Wings draftee and I could see the looks of envy from across the faces of every NHL GM wondering, "How the heck do the Wings do it?"

Fast forward to today, I have to say I am a bit disappointed but the resurgence of Osgood at age 35 and his play in the Cup Finals last Spring gives me hope that perhaps serious adversity just might be the way for Howard to nail down his future as a bona-fide #1 goalie.

    • Matt Saler says:

SYF, I'm a Howard fan myself, believe me, which makes his apparent developmental plateau all the more disappointing.

You make a good point about adversity, though. If Jimmy can overcome being outplayed by a first-year player and being stuck behind Chris Osgood, he should be a great one for the Wings.
