I think Hossa will be fine once he figures out his linemates. He's trying to adjust to a new team and new system, and with Pavel Datsyuk out for a bit, things will be trickier to start. I'm not worried about him at all.

Think of it this way - if anyone can redeem the number 44, it will be Aaron Downey, Mr. Positive. :)

And congrats all around.

I knew coming in that Hossa wasn't usually the player he was in the playoffs, and particularly the finals, but it really looks like he's struggling out there. He's not playing badly, but it seems obvious he's not playing as well as he should be or wants to. In the first part of the Wings first (I think?) power play, for instance, it looked like he didn't know where to go. And he makes plays that I don't think his linemates expect him to make.

And I thought Helm was absolutely tremendous. He wasn't far from being the Wings best forward this game. Except for that one time he was schooled by Kovalev, he was as good defensively as anyone else (see that time he gave the puck away to Gorges, then chased him down and stole it back in about three strides? That was unreal) and created more offense than anyone this side of Hossa. If only there were some way to combine Helm and Leino into one super-player...

His choice of number notwithstanding, I thought Downey had a good game, too. He had at least one solid takeaway, and I remember him being involved in a decent scoring chance or two. Ritola and Abdelkader are the only other players I really noticed, and both of them just need more experience, to start making better offensive decisions. Stuff like waiting for there to be traffic before taking a shot.

That 5-on-3 was painful without Lidstrom. He just has a way of getting pucks through, and not just for himself, but he pulls coverage away from Rafalski, making his shots more dangerous, too. And why did Chelios keep shooting from the boards? I know he doesn't have much of a shot any more, but if he's going to take one, he's got to take it from the middle of the rink.

And of course, large congratulations on the job and extra-large on the marriage. Must be pretty crazy for you around now (and for the last and next few months, probably).
