Not only is watching new young players develop and grow make this team seem closer to me, but there is one other factor - internet.

Since the lockout I have been reading and commenting on blogs, and when I think back on this season as well as the last couple years, not only do I think about the players themselves, but also the wonderful, bizarre and quirky conversations I've had with my people online. Checking the internet during breaks and work and trying not to laugh out loud and the direction a conversation was going, distracting myself with liveblogs on A2Y or Behind the Jersey during the games, commiserating with each other over losses and celebrating together over the wins - when I think about this team I not only think about the team itself, but the new friends I feel like I've made over the season.

The downside is that now I have to share, because when fewer people realized how awesome Zetterberg and Datsyuk were, I railed against their blindness, but at the same time I felt the same way someone does if they have found a fantastic fishing spot - you don't want too many people to know about it, because then it isn't special anymore. Still, I think I can live with that. It's hard to be anonymous hauling around a giant silver cup, and I'm willing to pay the price of reduced exclusivity. :)

Matt, I found your blog early in the 2006-2007 year. This is a great blog. Your final analysis was right on! I'm one of the many Wings fan from far away (although I did live in Birmingham from 1954-1959). After looking at other teams blogs from the last two years playoffs, from your links, I believe yours is the best. I live 2K+ miles away but am seriously considering taking a week vacation next January or February and coming back to Detroit to see 3 or 4 games.

Matt, I completely agree about feeling closer to this team than I had with any previous Red Wings team. I think that it has something very major to do with watching the young talent bloom and create a system and watching the older players like Draper, Maltby, and Lidstrom be the rocks upon which to build. I also think that it has something to do with, what I believe will be another future Hall-of-Famer the Wings have acquired. I don't think any team in the league belongs to a coach as much as the Red Wings belong to Mike Babcock. Kenny Holland et al gave him the talent and he turned it into a winner. Naturally, the veterans had a large part in this too, but it was Uncle Mike's system everybody bought in to.

Finally, I want to say that this is the first year I seem to have discovered the internet. I appreciate having your site online to get updates about the Red Wings; keep up the good work!
