firebird,

Thanks for reading, but I'm sorry it wasn't more complete!

Justin,

I did notice that turnover by Rafalski and it's one the main reasons I was less than impressed with his defensive showing. He's very fortunate Hank bailed him out or he'd have started the season as a goat.

firebettman,

Samuelsson is signed through next season. He's one of the streakiest players I've ever seen, but his upside is pretty good. Hopefully he'll stay healthy and have a few hot streaks this season.

Scott,

You're right, Hank looked a step ahead for much of the game and was solid in the defensive zone - when he didn't have the puck. As Megan noted, his passing was not up to par, though it was noticeable mainly in the defensive end. He made a few bad decisions with the puck and they stood out, but nothing too terrible developed as a result. Maybe I'm just hard on him because he's my favorite player and I basically expect him to be perfect.

I think Pronger got off a little easy. The fans didn't give him as hard a time, and he didn't get any special attention from Drake, as you pointed out. Maybe next time.

I have to say, it was a great way to open the season. Of course, it would've been nice to totally whoop them, but it was a very exciting game. Datsyuk started right where he left off. He was absolutely amazing. Zetter was phenomenal defensively, and he scored a goal, but I have to say he left a little to be desired in his passing. Our powerplay was very good, but you can certainly notice Schneider is missing. Rafalski was good on the point, but he's not Schneider. Our points just aren't as dangerous as they were when Lids and Schneids were on them. But that doesn't seem to be too much of a factor, since we did score twice.
It was actually Hudler that scored the shootout goal. It was a gorgeous goal. I was hoping they would put him out during the shootout, because that was his specialty in GR. It was just a great goal, and a great moment for him. I think he'll become an asset this season.

Hey Matt....welcome back!

I will have to disagree with you on Hank. He was 2 steps ahead of most of the team the whole game and was playing the 3rd Dman VERY well....he shouldn't have had to, but thats another story.

Chelios looked out of sorts a bit, but it's early....give him time to get his tires warmed up!

HUGE props for Dallas Drake. I only wish he would have given Pronger a little something, but....maybe next time.

Great write-up Matt! I only caught the shootout goal by Filppula, but was very very happy to see it, especially being my first 2007-08 Red Wings moment.

Glad to hear the power play is looking strong after last year's terrible power play... I still think that's what killed us overall last year. And it's good to hear Maltby had a strong showing...

what is Samuelson's contract? he's one that I could see going soon... he was impressive the first year, but didn't do much for me or the team last year.

GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!

I've missed reading these reviews. Living in Canada, I only get to watch a few Detroit games each season. And sometimes, these are better reviews than watching the video highlights.

Did you notice Rafalski's giveaway at the Anaheim blueline late in overtime? It looked like he didn't know whether to dump the puck in or bring it over the line himself, and then Getzlaf used the opportunity to pick his pocket. Zetterberg had to prevent Getzlaf from getting a clear cut breakaway.

Also, it was good to see that we outshot the Ducks by an almost 3:1 ratio. That kind of puck control was what won us games last year.
