Game 4: @ San Jose, 10:00 ET

Update (7:05 PM): Been a long day. Anyway, the update is that, as expected, Jiri Hudler will sit tonight while Tomas Holmstrom will play. Ansar Khan has more from practice, including possible initial lines at his new site. - Matt

I’ve got three finals today, so this’ll be brief:

Tonight is Game 4 of the Wings’ Western Conference Semifinal series with the San Jose Sharks, who lead it 2-1.

The Sharks have a chance to go up 3-1 in the series tonight with a win. To do this, they’ll need to do these things, among others:

  • Convert Red Wing mistakes. They’ve been doing a good job of this all series and they need to continue to do so.
  • Clear rebounds in the defensive zone. With the return of Tomas Holmstrom to the Detroit lineup, this becomes even more important.
  • Fully utilize depth. Part of the Wings’ problem Monday night may have been fatigue, so rolling four energetic lines may wear them down again.

For the Wings, this is a must-win situation. It’s not an elimination game, of course, but there’s no guarantee they’ll win Saturday at home after they lost the series opener there. To win tonight, they’ll need to,

  • Play a full first period. A good start is key and that means more than just the first 10 minutes.
  • Play a full second period. They can’t just be satisfied with a good first, they need to continue it.
  • Play a full third period. They can’t let up in the third, either.

Sure, the above three are very general and require a lot of other things to be done right (any of which could also be “keys to the game”), but I think it’s very important that they play hard for a full 60 minutes tonight. Unless they get a couple lucky garbage goals and a stolen game by Dominik Hasek, this will have to be their best playoff game thus far, and that includes the now semi-legendary Game 1 against the Flames.

This game has just been frustrating. The Wings play great, then just for whatever reason decide they've played enough for one period and stink up the joint, and the Sharks are pouncing on it. And the first Sharks goal really was the definition of a momentum killer. The Wings were dominating up until that point, and then a lucky Cheechoo deflection keeps the puck in the zone, and they end up scoring.

The PP goal right at the end of the second was huge. I was thinking after the 2nd Sharks goal, that the Wings needed one before the end of the period. To be honest, I would be perfectly happy if the Wings just tied it up and went to OT. That is, if they continue their play from the last 4 minutes of the second. If they play like that in the 3rd, they could take the game, nevermind just tie it. But when the Wings are playing, the Sharks don't scare me at all.

Come guys, gut it out and bring this one home! Go Wings!

  2. Peter says:

    Oh, Lang!!!

  3. Jordan says:

Haha. I've still got love for you Lang! Who'd of thought?

  4. Tim says:

LANG WAKES UP! I'M SORRY ROBERT!

  5. Alex says:

He takes 59:20 of the game off, but he just redeemed himself. Robert, thank you!

Here we go, for OT, I'm thinking Hank. He's been all over the Sharks, and now is when he's finally gonna get his. If I had to pick a Shark, I'd go with "whoever gets a pass from Thornton." Because honestly, that's what it'll be if San Jose wins lol.

  6. Matt Saler says:

I had just thought a few minutes before how Lang had been having a pretty good game. He was making pretty decent efforts in the offensive zone and it seemed like he was finally coming around. Then he goes and scores that goal. Sheesh. Where've you been, Robert?

    This is crazy

  7. Nick says:

I was bitching at the TV about Lang 5 seconds before he scored. Sorry Lang, you can float around all you want as long as you get a goal.

  8. Ol' dang Lang comes through, finally!!!

    GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Alex says:

Dom has gotta stop knocking the puck away from his teammates. The Sharks almost scored because he knocked the puck away from Franzen and right to Marleau.

  10. Alex says:

Don't ever let Calder on the ice again. If the Sharks score on this PP, the blame lies solely on him. He should've gotten the puck deep, but instead got fancy, lost it and the Sharks nearly scored, resulting in Schneider's penalty.

  11. Peter says:

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Huge doesn't negin to describe the lat 15 minutes of gameplay.

  12. Alex says:

Mathieu Schneider!!!!!! What a play to knock it down! Tie series!

  13. Tim says:

WOOT WOOT F!@#$ING WOOT! I Wish words could describe the feelings right now. Whatever residents in my appartment complex that didn't wake up with 10 seconds in the Third are awake now!

  14. Tim says:

    Peter,

"Huge doesn’t negin to describe the lat 15 minutes of gameplay."

I like this sentence! Makes me think I'm not the only one who drinks while watching games :)
