NHL Hands Out Fines, Suspension For Game 5 Antics

Update (3:02 PM): Here’s the NHL Press release. -Sarah

TSN reports that Jamie McLennan has been suspended for 5 games for his meltdown yesterday. The announcers on NBC have just announced that Calgary’s coach Jim Playfair will be fined $25,000 and the organization will be fined $100,000. The NHL said that the team must be held accountable for the player’s actions. Personally I don’t think that 5 games is enough, but I’m just glad they didn’t let him get away with it completely. Good to see Playfair and the organization being held accountable.

I hope Langkow is prepared for Todd Bertuzzi tonight - he should just sit this game out.

Yeah I’d really like to see somebody do something - you know, in a face to face fight - not Calgary style…

That said, it’s most important that we focus on winning the game and don’t get caught up in all the crap with Calgary - that’s exactly what they want us to do.

BFD! Fines and a suspended back-up? Way to go NHL, nothing like a slap on the wrist. Wings lose a good defenseman and the Flames lose nothing? I swear Bettman has it out for the Wings. The officiating and league actions make me sick. This isn’t the NHL anymore. It’s the GHL; Gary’s Hockey League.

on CBC, Ron McLean, Kelly Hrudey and Craig Simpson all said that the hit on Franzen wasn’t that bad and that 5 games is excessive - they also said that Langkow’s punch and Iginla going crazy at the end were “Just a part of hockey”.

Umm…will someone tell those guys that “Slapshot” was a fictional movie.

Ron said that one of the Wings hit Kipper’s glove and didn’t get a penalty - except they did get a penalty - and that Maltby purposely ran over their goalie and also didn’t get a penalty - wrong again - I thought Don Cherry was the dumb one.

I’d rather hurt the Flames on the scoresheet.

The CBC commentators continue to be jokes, with Don Cherry leading the way. Their Canadian bias is so disgusting and it really showed yesterday. I used to respect MacLean but he made some pretty dumb comments too.

As for Lebda slashing Kiprusoff, I have no idea why the CBC commentators kept saying that. He did NOT slash Kiprusoff. He was taking a swing at the puck hoping to get a shot off and his stick hit Kipper’s glove on the follow through. It was clear as day what happened and yet the CBC clowns kept saying, “Lebda slashed Kiprusoff’s glove”. In fact, I watched the whole game on CBC yesterday and the commentating job was downright awful. They kept saying the wrong names, saying the wrong teams, calling plays wrong, etc. etc. It was worse than listening to Pierre McGuire do a game…
