Game 3: @ Calgary, 10:00 ET

Update (9:50 PM): Via Gorilla Crouch: Bertuzzi is in, Hudler is out. That’s a shame for Jiri. He’s had a heck of a series so far. I don’t agree with Babcock’s judgment here, as the team is going to miss what Jiri can bring to the game. Mikael Samuelsson has shown little thus far and I think he had better have a whale of a game tonight or else he ought to be riding the pine instead of Huds on Thursday. I’d hate to see Jiri have to sit for the rest of the playoffs, so hopefully they’ll institute some kind of rotation. - Matt

Update (6:00 PM): IwoCPO says Ken Kal suggested earlier today that Bertuzzi might play on a line with Filppula and Franzen. I have to say that sounds like a barn-burner. Fil would have very little worry about with those two guys flying wingman.

Also, some wishful thinking from a Flames fan? I hope so. - Matt

Update (4:36 PM): Helene St. James has more from Babcock: “He told me he was great. I’ve said all along, as soon as he’s ready, he’s playing.”

Then he’s playing, right? No? Yes? This is getting ridiculous.

And she’s got this from Bertuzzi: “I think everyone is going to take warm-up and we’ll go from there.”

So, what’s the deal? Is Babcock going to watch and see who doesn’t have their sock tape on straight and make a decision about who sits based on that?

Then there’s the rest of that quote: “Obviously I’m not going to be 100% at all for the rest of the year so it’s just a matter of working as hard as I can.”

Excuse me. What? “Not going to be at 100% at all“? Was the concussion that bad or is his back still an issue? Will we ever know? It must be the back and maybe it’s not surprising, but he’s not supposed to talk like that. You’ve got fans’ sensibilities to consider now, Todd. - Matt

Update (3:30 PM): According to Ted Kulfan, Mike Babcock said today that Bertuzzi is still a game time decision, even after Todd participated in today’s morning skate. Kulfan says Bertuzzi looked “fit” out there today, so it seems like he’s ready. Still, the Wings are playing things close to the vest, which means we have to wait until we get it from FSN in the pre-game. - Matt

Update (2:40 PM): Some good news for the Wings as they get ready to play in a very hostile environment: Bruce MacLeod reports that Robyn Regehr did not skate this morning. Like he says, that probably means Regehr will not play tonight. - Matt

Update (12:30 PM): IwoCPO’s got a good list of reminders for Wings fans everywhere as we get ready for the first late game of the postseason. - Matt

Update (11:55 AM): Over at his snazzy new blog (same name, new location/look), George Malik has a great roundup of quotes from the Wings relating to the game, from both Detroit and Calgary media sources. - Matt

Tonight is Game 3 of the Quarterfinal Series between Detroit and Calgary, a series the Wings lead 2-0.

The Flames just need to be better, in all areas of the game. First and foremost, they need to be more disciplined and find a way to be physical without taking penalties. If they do that, they’ll be better able to defend against the Wings’ attack. They also need to find a way to get their top players going. Overall, the most important thing is giving Miikka Kiprusoff some support. The guy can win games for them, but they have to actually play in front of him if he’s going to do that.

This game is huge for the Flames. If they win it, they’ll gain loads of confidence and we’ll have a series. If they lose, in front of their home crowd, they might as well start scheduling their tee-times.

All the Wings need to do is play like they’ve been playing. The only improvement I can see is they need to be better on the power play. If the Flames are going to take dumb penalties, it’d be great if they could capitalize on them more. Overall, though, if they play their newfound physical game and their standard puck possession offense/defense with as much confidence as they have in Games 1 and 2, they should be able to match anything the Flames might throw at them. And if the Flames don’t show up, no amount of atmosphere at the Saddledome will keep the Wings from a win.

For the Wings, this game is important because they need a win on the road to end this series quickly. The last thing they want is to start a habit of losing on the road to Calgary because that would mean a 7-game series and you can bet they’re hoping for a longer break between series than that.

The Flames are promising that they’ll be a different team tonight. They also promised that for Game 2 and it got them about a period of B-grade hockey. For now, I’ll assume they’ll be better, but in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, “Show me the money.” While the Wings have been showing all along that they’re capable of winning this series, the Flames have shown little or nothing. Tonight’s their time to demonstrate whether they want it or not. I said at the beginning of the series that they’d win Game 3, but every period of this series that I watch is convincing me that Calgary isn’t capable of even that. That’s fine with me. I know the Wings want it and that’s all that matters.

Matt – Keep up the good work man, these updates keep me going through my day.

  2. Paul says:

I think what he means about not being 100% is that he'll never get back into game shape this season – not even by the end of the playoffs. He basically had no training camp, no practice or playing all year – he's coming in cold.

I think the idea behind the "maybe? yes? no?" crap with him is that they don't want the Flames to know if they have to prepare for him or not.

  3. Matt Saler says:

Good points, Paul. I was mostly kidding in that update (I'd just had a lot of caffeine, you see), but I agree with your more serious assessment on the situation.

I'm sure some of this is mindgames, but it could also be the Wings are ambivalent about playing Todd when the lineup is working so well. They have this guy they really want to use, but there isn't a really obvious spot to put him.

  4. Dave says:

Yeah, I agree a line of Bert, Mule and Fil would be pretty sweet.

  5. Paul says:

    On that "wishful thinking":

"Todd Bertuzzi is a selfish player, and it only gets worse in the playoffs. He takes bad penalties. Horrible, horrible penalties. He says things to the media to draw attention to himself, even if he says he doesn’t want the attention. He promises victory to crowds of Minnesota Wild fans, and we all know how that turned out"

what this guy obviously does not understand is how the Wings have consistently managed to bring players into the fold and turn them into winners. into consistent players. into responsible players. into selfless, team-oriented hard workers.

one only has to look at Kyle Calder for an example. as he points out, he was underachieving in Philly. now look at him. night and day, just because he put on the Winged Wheel.

  6. Matt Saler says:

    Paul, again, great points.

I think that is an aspect of Red Wings hockey that the fans of other teams (and maybe those teams themselves) don't want to admit as true. The Wings are the big, bad evil empire, they think. How could going there actually be good for a player's career? Maybe they're thinking of the Rangers and getting the two teams confused.

Todd may never fit in like Calder, but I don't think he'll be a chemistry issue. He looked pretty good with Datsyuk, for example. He's here to win and to contribute. Calgary fans and others just don't want to admit it.

  7. Dave says:

There's no doubt about Bert's past, but Jim Nill said they thought he could fit in better in Detroit because he doesn't have to be "the guy". Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Draper are the team leaders.

If the Wings really believed he couldn't help the team would they really have made the trade for him?

  8. Matt Saler says:

The first was pretty even, with both teams playing well. This'll be more of a battle than Games 1 and 2. The promised first 10:00 rush by Calgary didn't materialize, but they had their moments of pressure.

Bertuzzi not all that impressive thus far. Neither is Samuelsson. I'm standing by my assertion that they would have been better off playing Jiri.

Dom's getting more work and is looking solid.

  9. Dave says:

Bert started to make some nice hits at about the 6:00 mark of the second. Wings seem to be hitting a little more and establishing some ice time in the offensive zone. The third line has been awesome once again.

  10. Matt Saler says:

Yeah, Todd is definitely becoming a physical presence. I liked what I saw from the Wings later in the period, but the Flames continue to be dangerous. The defense is a little bit less certain tonight.

The third line has been the best on the ice, I think.

I can't believe how the refs have swallowed their whistles. I know they're missing all kinds of calls on the Flames (interferences, mostly) and they must be missing calls on the Wings as well. It just seems like some of them ought to be called.

Still a tight game. Too tight.

  11. Dave says:

Yeah, you just have to expect the home team to get the lion's share of the calls. That's just the way it tends to go. But the Wings seemed to make some small strides last period. Not huge, but they are headed in the right direction.

  12. Dave says:

DAN CLEARY IS A FREAKING BEAST.

    That is all…

  13. Dave says:

Okay, I take it back. Bill McCreary has been Calgary's best threat. He assisted on both PP goals.

The Flames just scored their first even-strength goal of the series.

  14. Justin says:

    On that "wishful thinking"…

I followed the link and read a couple of that guy's posts, as well as his explanation of why he thinks the Flames will win. The guy is a terrible writer and lacks any real analyzing ability. The fact that he said Eastern analysts are unfamiliar with Luongo's style of play shows how little credibility he has. I don't know why you bothered having such a long debate with him, Matt.

Game just finished. I expected the Flames to play a much better game and even win this one, but I didn't expect such a bad game from the Wings. Bertuzzi wasn't even a factor and Lang pissed me off all game long. Only good thing was Cleary's monster hit on Phaneuf, giving him a taste of his own medicine. (I wonder if Dion got a concussion from slamming into the boards after he fell. He did look really out of it.)

Ugh…I'm just disgusted right now. I just hope Babcock will be pissed and get them to play a better game on Thursday.

  15. Alex says:

First off, thanks for doing this Matt. You're my #1 source for Red Wings info here in Canada.

On the third period, that was the most atrocious period I've seen by the Wings in a long time. They looked lackadasical, and both goals should've never occurred. Why Lidstrom didn't just hammer the puck out of the zone on the second I'll never know, and then he gets caught trying to pinch up and steal a pass, leading directly to Iginla's goal. He needs to paly A LOT smarter than that.

I also wasn't impressed with Hasek in the 3rd. There was a few times he wandered for no apparent reason, and he should've had Iginla's goal. He normally comes out to take the angles away, yet he stayed in his net on that one.

The referees were also pretty crummy. But you have to hand it to the Flames, they shut down our PP. They also played a fantastic third, and just plain out-worked the Wings.

I have to ask, why was Robert Lang of all people taking the faceoff in the dying seconds? Why was he even on the ice? I seriously hope Babcock takes him out and puts Jiri back in. Jiri's speed would've been very helpful tonight, and Lang is just collecting a paycheck.

One positive about tonight was Maltby-Draper-Cleary. They were by far the best line for the Wings, and it was nice to see Drapes get a couple goals.

To close my long rant, the team better learn from this game. They need to be better defensively, and the PK needs to be a lot better than it was. We were getting our chances to score, we just hit a few posts and Kipper was Kipper.

Actually, one more thing: Mike Babcock, I beg you, please get rid of Lilja. Just go with 5 defencemen. He was the sole reason for the first goal, he didn't take the man, and his non-shalant attempt at a stick check was disgusting to see. He's a liability plain and simple. Put Meech in the line-up, double-shift the guys, or hell, put in a pylon and park it in front of the net. At least it will block a shot/pass.

Game four is the key to this series. The Wings absolutely need to win. They can't allow the Flames to build any more momentum. If they lose, Calgary is taking it in 6.

  16. Matt Saler says:

    Both comments well put, Dave.

Justin, it seems as though that guy may have been right about Todd. He did not impress tonight. Dan Cleary did, though, and that hit on Phaneuf was great. Too bad it didn't spark the team any more than it did.

    Alex,

Both Hank and Lidstrom were at fault on that play. Not a great shift by our two best players.

I agree about Hasek. He wasn't at his best in the third.

The Flames may have outworked the Wings, but they were also committing a ton of penalties, especially interference, without getting called. Hard work is admirable, but not when they're getting away with illegal actions.

As for Lang, I asked the same question. They'll never sit him, though, which is unfortunate. I think he's done as a Wing now, forget about July 1.

I think they'll definitely learn from this. I have confidence in this team that they'll make the necessary adjustments.

I thought Lilja actually had a pretty strong game. He's becoming better, surprisingly enough, and has been playing his rear end off this series. When even Nick is making bad plays, I'm more willing to give Andreas the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know if it's such a dire situation that the Wings have to win Game 4. It's important, yes, but I don't think it'd mean the end. Not that it matters, though. Personally, I'm confident that they'll win Game 4 and then close it out in Game 5, so we won't have to worry about the Flames getting any more momentum.

  17. Justin says:

Man all three Calgary goals tonight were scored because of mental mistakes by the Wings. That home crowd advantage must've really gotten to the Wings. And I know it'll never happen, but Babcock really needs to bench Lang. Send him a message that he can't just coast around every game. It works for a lot of players, so who knows? Maybe it could work for Lang.

If they lose Game 4, they'll lose any momentum and confidence they built up from the first two games while the Flames build momentum and confidence of their own. Wings won't be in any dire situation, but if they win Game 4 then they'll really have a stranglehold on the series with Game 5 returning to the Joe. I pray that Babcock will make the right adjustments for the next game and the Wings don't play another game like this one.
