Justin,
I'm not saying I think Calder's going to go out and become a scoring machine, but I think he could (and should) easily be an improvement over Jason Williams. My optimism is fueled by, as you said, Detroit's ability to turn "rejects into decent players." If nothing else I won't have to watch Williams struggle any more and I am pretty excited about that. (It was becoming painful!)

Well, I'm more interested in seeing how he fits in than really excited. I think the Wings wouldn't have acquired him if they didn't think he'd benefit from playing in their system, in the same way Mikael Samuelsson did.

I'm waiting to pass judgment, but in the meantime, I trust Holland's.

I know you're feeling excited about Calder, and I don't want to ruin your optimism. But he's an underachiever and never lived up to his potential. He had his best season stats-wise last year in Chicago, but it was more because he was thrust into the #1 forward position than him improving his game. Don't expect him to put up a lot of points for the Wings.

But I'm not completely frowning on this trade though. I was tiring of Williams and this could turn out to be an improvement. And plus, Detroit has turned rejects into decent players before (see Samuelsson and Draper) so it's very possible that Calder turns into a productive player in the red and white. As was mentioned, he's a gritty forward and I can see him fitting in on a line with Draper and Maltby.
